Fearful of our Government
February 6, 2009
AS world news warns us daily of the dire economic outlook, Bermudians, fearing the ramifications for themselves, are left with no choice but to seek comfort from the nightly televised updates of another country's President.
Why? Because our own leadership is in London frittering away much needed foreign exchange on offices we don't need or playing golf on courses we can't play on while exempt companies release once secure jobs to the uncertainty of the local job market.
Our leader Dr. Ewart Brown (photographed at right) can only be found as a photo-op in the newspaper, reminding taxpayers where their taxes are really ending up: Gala balls and musical extravaganzas.
It takes two cheques to finally bring our leader home, send him to the top of the mountain and proclaim, "let the word go forth". . . blah blah blah!" As the heavens open, lightening strikes and no stone is left unturned. We presume the taxpayers foot that bill too.
It is the same taxpayers who provided the $24,780 that was allegedly sent to Scorpio Construction Ltd. and Chester management.
Will the Permanent Secretary be holding up the original invoices for us all to see what that money paid for?
Of course without public access to information, legislation in force, we shall have to be content to watch our leader chase down the one person out of 60,000 who perpetrated "these fowl acts".
Never mind the 59,999 others who wait nervously to hear of their future security on an island that imports everything including 'hope' from our surrogate leader in Washington.
