How Unite painted the town Red!

DJ LT is a self-confessed old fogey, hovering at around 42 years old. He doesn't even go out too much anymore. However, last week he was approached by Mr. Belcario Thomas and invited to Unite Promotions' Red Party II, which was held last Saturday evening at the very cool Splash Nightclub. This has to be the best party I've been to in ages. My wife, who is a very tough customer when it comes to such events, enjoyed herself and spoke glowingly about it afterwards.

Unite Promotions is a relatively new company owned by friends Belcario Thomas, Denny O'Connor and Raymond Walker.

"We first got together to put on a few parties, due to the lack of entertainment on the island and great parties for classy, hip people who are young at heart", said Belcario Thomas, a former Bank of Butterfield employee and the son of the late, great entrepreneur, Mr. Freddie Thomas (bless his soul). "Most of our friends, and we ourselves, were complaining that there was nothing to do, nowhere to go. So, Raymond, Denny and I decided to put on some parties of our own, to create our own entertainment.

"Our first event was back in 2004, held at the Fairmont Southampton. The event was such a huge success that we decided to have another, and another, and the rest, as they say, is history", quipped the young entrepreneur. "We are so busy and we see so much opportunity, that I quit my job and am now running Unite Promotions full time."

"Each of us brings something different to the business. Raymond is an accountant, I organise conventions for a living and Belcario does most of the Business Development" added Denny O'Connor, who is by day a convention services manager at the Fairmont Southampton.

But, back to Saturday night's party.

The Red Party II evening featured an early (7 pm - 9 pm) Cocktail reception/lounge party, followed by the main event from 9 pm until ... The music was hot in the main nightclub. However, the organisers cleverly had a second DJ outside in the alley that runs between Splash and the building to its north, who was banging out some unbelievable house joints (that's "music" for the uncool among you; no, there was no weed at this party).

This was good, because most people like to move around in a party, and if you felt like a change of scenery, you could slip outside to the bar in the alley, sit a comfortable leather sofa, and enjoy a martini or any one of the many other specialty drinks on offer, such as the Veuve Cliquot to which the wife and I were treated. I was thinking, "Hey, this is how I'm living!"

I should comment on the décor. Since the party was red-themed, in the spirit of Valentine's Day, nearly everything was red. Kudos must be extended to Danalee Trott, who does all the decorating for Unite Productions and who, I must say, does an excellent job. Splash Nightclub was beautifully decorated with red ornaments.

Then there were these very cool martinis with red fluorescent lightsticks in them, which were more than just conversation pieces, they were also eye catching. I imagine our four-year-old would have really enjoyed playing with them.

"Danalee is very talented and always delivers on the décor", added Raymond Walker, son of legendary Bailey's Bay cricket captain Sinclair (Chips) Walker, who is using his bookkeeping skills to ensure that Unite's numbers add up. "She is going to be taking on a more active role in the business as we move ahead and we look forward to bringing her on board in a more meaningful and involved capacity."

Surprisingly, unlike most "event" parties, lots of people were there early; they must know all about Unite Productions' ability to stage an excellent do. In any event, people turned up early, people were dancing early and a good time was had by all, from start to finish.

The crowd was very cool. There were many beautiful people; good looking guys, stunning ladies, all dressed to kill, most in some variety of red, of course. There was no riff raff, no scrubs, mostly young but classy young people, some older folks (DJ LT's peers), but mostly a young, cool, hip crowd.

Tickets were $30, so you eliminate a certain undesirable element automatically.

There were no fights, no Town Vs. Country punks, only people there to have a good, clean, safe, fun time and to enjoy some awesome music. I stood on the upper level and watched people dancing for a while, and the dancefloor was rammed from 11 pm until closing. Clearly a good time was being had by all. And it was a happy party, with no problems.

Don't you wish every party or every night out could be like this? Why can't we all just get along?

And let's talk about the slammin' music. I don't know who this guy DJ Chub is, but he was on his game on Saturday night. Home boy played a beautifully diverse and eclectic selection of music, from Rap, to Rock to Reggae, to R&B. He even took us back to the '80s and '90s for some Black Box (remember the staple Everybody, Everybody?), et al. Of course the other Splash DJ, DJ Bitsy, was there stealing the show as M.C., announcing various raffle prizes, house prizes and other giveaways throughout the evening, whilst encouraging DJ Chub who continued to play an amazing diversity of kicking tracks. He was killing me softly with his songs. I didn't want to leave when it was all over, and how many times have you said that at a party lately? In fact, nobody wanted to leave. One of the best things in the world is to see people happy. On this night, at Unite's Red Party II, people were happy. They were dancing, enjoying a few beverages, interacting with others, seeing people they may not have seen for a while, appreciating a great variety of music, hanging out in a very cool club, and most importantly, they were having a blast! It seems like the entertainment scene in Bermuda is moving on up. Perhaps the solution to our entertainment woes, as stated by many a tourist, is to put entertainment in the hands of our young people. They have the energy, drive, ideas and interest to pull this off, but most importantly, they can reach the younger audiences that tend to or would like to hang out more. All in all, it was a great event and I understand that they will be organising more in the future. So stay tuned for the next great event, coming to a venue near you, very soon, courtesy of Unite Productions.
