Independence is well worth checking out

Thing of beauty: The Independence sits in harbour at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.

One of the world's largest yachts is currently in Hamilton. The Independence, with its shiny navy-blue hull, is difficult to miss as she sits almost 174 feet long at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC). The twin screw ketch is able to hold up to twelve passengers. Headed by Captain Chris Blunt she has been in Bermuda since May 29.

Power and Motor yacht Magazine in 2001 listed the 100 largest yachts in America and while the Cayman registered Independence would not have been included, she is significantly bigger than the largest (142 ft) mentioned there.

The magazine also lists the 100 largest yachts in the world and includes yachts of her size.

Capt. Blunt would not divulge names of the owner of Independence or allow The Royal Gazette on board for a tour. He was cordial and gave an informational card which includes details of her structure, and travels.

This "purely luxury boat" has been crossing oceans and visiting countries since being built in 1998 at the Perini Navi Ship Yard in Viareggio, Italy, at a cost of some $25 million. It has been across the Pacific, stayed in New Zealand, the Caribbean, and was in Europe for a brief stay. The Independence also visited the last Americas Cup as a spectator.

Following a recent refitting and painting, it sailed into St. George's before heading down into Hamilton. The crew plans on staying in Bermuda until the end of the month, when the vessel will sail to Newport.

"Though it rained a bit when we first got here, it really is beautiful now...it's great", Capt. Blunt said, about his stay on the Island.

This beautiful, world-travelled boat is certainly worth a look, although no on-board tours are currently being conducted.
