Jazz misnomer

There's no question that the recent Bermuda Jazz Festival was a hugely successful event as far as musical performances go.

Musical giants from Natalie Cole to Freddie Jackson wowed the packed crowds on all three nights.

There is some question, however, about how valuable it is as a device for bringing visitors to the Island. This year, the number of visitors coming specifically for the Jazz Festival was down, in part because of the effects of Hurricane Fabian. Whether the exposure from having the festival broadcast on BET justifies the large amount of money spent to bring 1,000 people to the Island remains an open question.

Several jazz aficionados (jazz lovers are always aficionados, not fans) have pointed out that the title of the Festival is a misnomer. It brings great performers to the Island, but few are genuine jazz musicians, they say, and they are right.

The time has come to rebrand the festival as something other than a jazz festival. Any ideas?
