Last day to enter Spelling Bee competition is tomorrow

Primary Schools are being advised that the closing date for the Bermuda College Spelling Bee Competition is tomorrow.

Evelyn James-Barnett said Primary School students were given a selection of words last May and they have had to study them over the holidays.

?When they came back at the start of the academic year they will get a second list of 150 words,? she said, ?So that will be a total of 250 words and then another 50 words that they have not seen will be used in the final spell down.

?October 1 is the deadline for all of the schools and we are asking the teachers and coaches to get the names of the winners, of whichever school, to as son as possible.

?For instance Elliot would have their own competition etc. All of the public schools are participating, four or five private schools, and a number of home schools.

Mrs. James-Barnett said after they have all of the names submitted, the winners will come to the Bermuda College for a photo shoot and on October 26, 27 and 28 they will take place in the Zone Down.

?That is when Central, West and East will compete against schools in their areas,? she said, ?The two winners from each of the Zone Downs will come for the final Spell Down on November 6, at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for Performing Arts.

?That will be televised live on VSB and one Zone Down will be televised live as well.?

She said the background is a culmination of the Bermuda College?s 30th Anniversary.

?We wanted to do something that would have a lasting impression,? said Mrs. James-Barnett.

?Something that will have a life of its own ? it will be an annual event. It is being held in conjunction with the Ministry of Education.?
