Letter: Time to pack your bags, Mr. Slayton
October 16, 2008
I BELIEVE Gregory Slayton is the most ineffective US Consul General to date, not that he hasn't said anything, just the opposite! He just doesn't know when to shut up!
As far as I'm concerned his terms of reference of office are to: Renew US passports, stamp visas and hand out hot dogs on July 4th and of course traipse around Bermuda's self-styled cafe society.
His recent speech as reported in The Royal Gazette, I found to be irritating, arrogant and condescending. He has no business sticking his nose into Bermuda's affairs, it's evident he neither has much knowledge nor respect for Bermuda nor us Bermudians living here.
His references to himself as a "trained economist" should be reviewed with alarm because as far as I'm concerned these are the same people who are responsible for the global mess we are now desperately floundering around in.
On the flip side if you "Google" the good Consul General you will find a man of towering intellect, a captain of industry and the object of essays and articles in academia and glossy financial magazines.
Well done Mr. Slayton, but that still does not get around the fact that you have hit your "sell-by-date" (just like the President who appointed you) and it's time to pack your bags, leaving plenty of room for your ego and please, please don't forget to take that damn base ball cap!
WONDERING & WANDERING IN SOUTHAMPTON
