Letters to the Editor

I cannot help but wonder how it is that David Burch can use the ?N? word out loud on Radio to abuse callers to his show and the Opposition, and then be made Minister of Works & Engineering. It does not stretch the imagination to surmise that nobody who is white or supports the UBP will be given assistance by the Minister.

Dear Sir,

I cannot help but wonder how it is that David Burch can use the ?N? word out loud on Radio to abuse callers to his show and the Opposition, and then be made Minister of Works & Engineering. It does not stretch the imagination to surmise that nobody who is white or supports the UBP will be given assistance by the Minister.

The racism shown by Alex Scott and David Burch is cause for real concern for the future of Bermuda, and despite the continued ?ostrich? stance of ?The Man?, it is very clear to all but the most fervent PLP supporters that Independence under a PLP government would be an unmitigated disaster.

Wayne Perinchief in a master stroke has emphatically told us that the PLP ship ?New Horizon? is about to set sail. I would gladly help him with the crew and passenger list, and stand on the dock and wave it goodbye. Bermuda would be out of the doldrums in a heartbeat.

I stand on my record

November 19, 2005

Dear Sir,

With reference to the letter written by Victor Garcia in RG November 19, 2005. For the record: Wayne Perinchief was the founder of Crimestoppers in Bermuda. He was first introduced to Crimestoppers whilst a student at the FBI National Academy in Quantico during the period October 1, 1984 to December 14, 1984. The information was passed on to the then Bermuda Police Community Relations Officer Sgt. Roger Sherratt who tried to solicit sponsorship for the programme in 1985 but the interest was not forthcoming from the public at that time and the project was shelved.

However in 1993/94 Commissioner of Police Lennet Edwards was looking for a Crime Prevention initiative and the then-Assistant Commissioner with responsibility for Criminal Investigation Wayne Perinchief again took up the Crimestoppers programme and introduced it to the Bermuda Police and the Public. He approached Mr. MacNeil Warner who accepted the post as the first Crimestoppers chairman. Argus Insurance Company?s David Pugh agreed to be a sponsor of the programme and a committee including now Superintendent Roseanda Jones from the Police, Rosemary DeShields (deceased) from the North Hamilton Merchants Association; among other helped launch the programme.

Crimestoppers was initially funded by a personal cash advance from Mr. Perinchief and then by a grant from the Bermuda Government after funding was denied by the then Police Commissioner Colin Coxall who had taken over from Commissioner Edwards and did not agree with the initial concept of Crimestoppers.

By 1986, Wayne Perinchief was already an Inspector in charge of the Police Prosecutions Department and then the Criminal Investigation Department in Central Division. He was on the front line of police investigations and prosecution of every significant criminal prosecution until 1995 when he retried and after retirement as late as 2003; when he gave evidence in the Supreme Court in the successful prosecution of a criminal case dating back 18 years resulting in a drug dealer being sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a young accomplice on Laffan Street.

After the PLP won the government in 1998 Wayne Perinchief was appointed to the National Drugs Commission; a post that he retained up to the time when he was appointed as the Minister of National Drug Control in 2005.

Prior to 1995 in his capacity as Assistant Commissioner in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Bermuda Police, Wayne Perinchief assisted the then Attorney General Elliott Motley and members of the Bermuda Monetary Authority and others to draft legislation to prevent Drug money laundering in the Caribbean region, as well as making recommendations preparatory to introducing PACE and other legislation.

Any other opinions concerning the appointment of Wayne Perinchief to the Post of Minister of National Drug Control; held by the author Victor Garcia are best viewed in the light of the facts provided above.
