LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
We need help now
November 1, 2004
Dear Sir,
The wonderful PLP promises for seniors include residential monitoring, wellness clinics, home assessments, even workshops. All of them are in the ?distant future?. I hope we are all around to enjoy the above!
There was no mention of the 100 percent to 168 percent rent increases in all seniors? homes!
We are not really interested in the ?distant future?. We would like some ?immediate steps? taken ?now? to address these as one MP quotes: ?Staggering increases.? This does not seem to be taking care of our seniors.
No need for the ?workshops?. I?ve managed over seventy years without one.
PLP?s lack of caring
October 27, 2004
Dear Sir,
Caring is compassion, empathy and the capacity to understand what other people are feeling. Caring is lacking in our Premier because he fails to practise putting himself in others persons shoes ? Premier Alex Scott?s lack of caring was so blatantly demonstrated when he failed to put in practice his Social Agenda in the case of Ms. Sharlita Steede. A caring person would have found time to give a word of advice and guidance.
It appears there is no one in the PLP Cabinet who has a sense of leadership to suggest that the decent thing to have done was to have our new Social Agenda take place in the case of Ms Sharlita Steede to ensure that no one is left behind.
Stop renting cycles
October 27, 2004
Dear Sir,
I see where Sir John Swan wants to change us to drive on the right side of the road. Wouldn?t we have to change our steering wheels to the left side and spend more money? Doesn?t Sir John already have a great big truck that already has the steering wheel on the left side? Maybe he had this change on his mind when he imported the truck.
Quinton Edness wants to have four-wheeled vehicles for tourist to rent. Quinton and Sir John should travel overseas, rent a four-wheel vehicle. Quinton could tow Sir John across country holding a large plaque reading ?Come to Bermuda we now drive or the right side of the road?. Maybe we?ll get more tourist to come here. Great advertising.
My deepest condolences go out to the two families for their lost in Bermuda. I really feel the tourist should travel by bus, ferry or taxi. Get rid of the rentals.
It?s up to Bermudians
October 29, 2004
Dear Sir,
If the letter to the Premier concerning the Association of Bermuda?s International Companies (ABIC ) is to be believed, that organisation is totally out of order. They are guests in our country and as guests, the determination of whether or not Bermuda should become Independent should not be part of their public debate.
We respect their contributions to our island?s revenues, but we, as Bermudians will resist all attempts to shape Bermuda according to their bottom lines. The idea of attempting to influence Bermuda politically is repugnant as it would be repugnant for Bermudian businesses to attempt to influence the US election.
In the future, there will be a number of political positions with which these companies will disagree. They work on behalf of their shareholders with little emotion because they are only in Bermuda for a defined period. The Premier works on behalf of Bermudians who are his shareholders.
If Immigration laws have to tightened to protect Bermudians form becoming second class citizens in their own country ? so be it. Companies of course, want more and more growth because this is how they measure success. Government might need to restrict the number of cars on the road. If this means only allowing senior and maybe middle management to own cars ? so be it.
If we need to turn a golf course or Morgan?s Point into strictly residential neighbourhoods because Bermudians have nowhere else to live ? so be it.
The quality of life in Bermuda, even for ABIC ?s members, is being compromised because of all kinds of pressures on Bermuda?s infrastructure. When will it end? Who will be bold enough to make the crucial changes which must occur? Certainly not the ABIC ; they have their own agenda which benefits them. Necessarily, we must rely on the Bermudian Government of the day to protect and act in the interest of Bermudians.
I am certain the ABIC realises the logic of all of the points I have made. It is up to Bermudians to say enough is enough and to realise the extent to which we can and are being manipulated.
Only we can save ourselves.
Turning the other cheek
November 3, 2004
Dear Sir,
This is to the driver who struck my car on Darrell?s Wharf today November 3, 2004.
God bless you! Even though my car was parked in a marked bay, you decided to scrape the paint off it anyway and not leave a note. The Bible says in Romans 12:19 ?Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, vengeance is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord.?
So again I say, God bless you, and I will have my car repaired.
