For Your Consideration<$> — Showbiz types will enjoy the send-up of their town’s strange creatures and goings-on in director Christopher Guest and writing partner Eugene Levy’s spoof of Hollywood awards season. But it’s such an insider story of an insider industry, the characters are remote and resonate far less sharply than the often pathetic, but recognisably real little souls of Guest and Levy’s previous comedies, such as Best in Show and A Mighty Wind. This time, they and their talented troupe of improvisers spin the tale of three actors (Catherine O’Hara, Harry Shearer and Parker Posey) caught up in Academy Awards fever after their not-so-hot independent drama catches some Oscar buzz. Along with Guest and Levy, the cast includes Fred Willard, Jennifer Coolidge, Jane Lynch and Michael McKean. PG-13 for sexual references and brief language. 86 minutes. Two and a half stars. — David Germain
