Riders hit the road

The children at Francis Patton School are in for a wild ride during their school?s Cycle Rodeo tomorrow.

Physical education teacher Garth Thompson said it was important for young people to learn proper road safety.

?There is no need for children to end up with brain damage because they were not wearing a helmet,? said Mr. Thompson.

?They will be practising in a mock city and will learn to use all signals for turning.?

?I decided to call it a Cycle Rodeo because it is a more catchy name than a Bicycle Safety Course.?

Mr. Thompson said someone from the Road Safety Council would also be there to show the children the right way to ride.

Mr. Thompson, who cycles a lot in his spare time, said that he had seen too many children riding without adequate safety gear.

?It is important for children to use helmets,? said Mr. Thompson.

?This is the first time that I am doing the Cycle Rodeo, but what they will learn they can use from age 4 to 84.?

The children who are taking part will be from classes P3 to P6.

He said they will be giving away water bottles, reflectors and bells that were donated by the Bermuda Bicycle Association and the Cycle Cellar.
