Spring Into the Arts celebrates the creative talents of local students

Schools across the Island are celebrating the artistic and creative talents of pupils during a week-long series of Spring Into The Arts events and have in the process been honouring a number of senior Bermudians who have excelled in the arts during their adult life.

The events present a chance for schools to showcase the talent and artistry of their students, putting on excerpts of shows that have been held at the various schools over the past year.

The first adult to be honoured during one of the five evening events was guitarist Milton Robinson who played with Bermuda?s own jazz bandleader, Lance Hayward in the 1950s and went on to have his own 14-year residency playing jazz at the Hamilton Princess Hotel, now the Fairmont Hamilton.

At the opening event held at CedarBridge Academy Mr. Robinson was the honouree.

Pupils from schools all over the Island have been showing off their talents with displays of art and performances at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts since last Wednesday with separate days allocated to accommodate different school areas.

Monday night it was the Dellwood family of schools? turn to put on a show with music, dance and drama being provided by Saltus Grammar, Berkeley Institute, Dellwood Middle, West Pembroke and Northlands Primary schools, Kid?s College, Victor Scott and St John?s pre-school.

Artist and former Government Minister Robert Barritt was expected to be honoured for his contribution to Bermuda art. The one-time Community and Cultural Affairs Minister was recently featured by the Bermuda National Gallery.

Limbo dancer Pedro Majias, who has travelled extensively around the world, was the honouree at the second Spring Into the Arts evening, which took place last Thursday. For the last 12 years he has been dancing and entertaining at Hawkins Island.

The Spring Into The Arts evenings, which are presented by the Ministry of Education and Development, continued at CedarBridge Tuesday evening when it was the Spice Valley family of schools? night, followed on Wednesday at Sandys Secondary Middle School when the Sandys family of schools put on their show.
