Stop the nonsense

There is plenty of blame to go around for the latest work to rule by Government bus drivers and garbage collectors.

There also seem to be plenty of people refusing to accept any responsibility at all, from the Bermuda Industrial Union to a variety of Government Ministers and civil servants.

There's only one victim though, and that's the general public, who through no fault of their own are having to make alternative travel arrangements and are forced to drag their garbage back and forth from their homes to the roadside.

It is impossible not to agree with Transport Minister Ewart Brown who described the action as immature, especially when a date has been set for the Government workers' back pay to be handed over and for a new contract to be signed.

But it boggles the mind that the Accountant General Department cannot seem to put together back pay within three months, while at the same time one has to wonder why it is that it takes the same amount of time for the union and an employer to sit down and sign an agreement after it has been settled.

Bearing in mind that it is the taxpayers who pay Government workers, it is time for the public to stand up and tell Government and the union to put a stop to this nonsense.
