TV documentary puts war veterans in the spotlight

BERMUDA'S war veterans will be honoured by a new documentary on television next Monday, as well as in the annual Remembrance Day Parade.

The new film, produced by the Bermuda Martime Musueum and sponsored by the Bermuda Electric Light Company, is called Bermuda's Defence Heritage, and it will premiere on VSB Channel 11 on Monday at 8 p.m.

On Monday morning, Bermuda's fallen of the two World Wars in particular will be remembered with the annual ceremony at the Cenotaph, involving Governor Sir John Vereker, as well as leading politicians and dignitaries.

Bermudian service men and women interviewed in the documentary include Graham Madeiros, Sir Richard Gorham, Earl Darrell, Mary Leighton, Horace Gibbons, Maisie Farge, Herbert Tatem, Michael Darling and Christopher Astwood.

The documentary is based on the Commissioner's House exhibition of the same title, and tells the story of local defence, from early 17th-century settlement to the present day.

Museum curator Charlotte Andrews said working on the documentary had been a memorable experience.

"I would say that every veteran has a fascinating story to tell, whether it's a story of their time here or overseas.

"I feel privileged to have met fellow Bermudians who have been through such incredible life experiences.

'The museum is proud to present this film on Remembrance Day, when we should all take time to reflect on those who came before us and served with dedication and bravery."

The film was written and co-produced by Paul Shapiro of Brimstone Media Ltd., shot and edited by film-maker Lucinda Spurling and narrated by Nigel Kermode.

The museum continues to research and collect on this aspect of Bermuda's heritage for the exhibition, permanent archive and the upcoming production of a major book on Bermuda's local forces and war veterans.
