Be aware of HIB

The health department recommend that all babies be innoculated against Haemophilus Influenza Type B.

But what is it?

Haemophilus influenza type B (HIB) is a serious disease caused by bacteria. It is not the strain of virus we commonly call ‘the flu’. It usually hits children under five years of age.

The disease can cause meningitis (infection of the brain and spinal covering), pneumonia, severe swelling of the throat (making it hard to breathe), infections of the blood, joints, bones and covering of the heart. It can be fatal.

It is an airborne disease and is usually contracted from contact with infected children or adults.

The HIB vaccine can prevent this disease.
