Burn fat, not fuel day: The public's feedback
These are the e-mail responses to our request for feedback on Burn Fat Not Fuel Day held on Friday:
I decided that this day would be an excellent day to combine a morning dose of exercise with walking to work. I often rise early and do a 3 mile loop from Hermitage Rd through Flatts and back along North Shore but today I made a change. I recruited my cousin who lives on Camden North to participate with me. I got up just before 6 put my work clothes in a backpack and walked from Hermitage Road to Camden North. Dropped my backpack and set off with my cousin to do two laps around the Botanical Gardens and back up to her house. Cleaned up and changed and then walked down the road to my office on Point Finger Road. All in all I walked about an hour and 45 mins. This was topped off at lunch time by walking up to Harbour Front to meet some other family members for a yummy lunch –a great reward for our morning workout.
I participated because there are just too many cars and too much pollution being caused by the traffic on the roads. I am training for End-to-End and walking on the roads while breathing in bus and truck fumes along with bikes and cars really isn’t very pleasant –to avoid this you either have to hit the railway trail or walk very early in the morning. I hope that all Bermudians can find ways to use their vehicles less, switch to electric bikes or get to work under their own power. It feels great and it helps our environment! - Pamela Barit Nolan
My three grandaughters, ages 5, 10 and 12 and I took the bus into Hamilton, walked to the younger one's nearby school; whilst the older two caught a connecting bus to their school (for them this was their first time commuting on their own - they were delighted! and I was very proud.) My five year old granddaughter was elated and whispered to me "I love the bus"!) In the afternoon, I walked to my granddaughters respected schools and took a bus back into Hamilton, where we stopped to a popular cafe and had fruit smoothies before ascending on the homeward bound bus. All in all, I feel fanstastic and the old bones got a good workout! The children had a pretty good workout as well and today will certainly be amongst on of their unforgettable memories. - Walia Ming
Caught the bus with my daughter Rhyan. I didn’t realize it was going to be free and I quite enjoyed it! Got a chance to read my novel and was at work by 8:15 a.m. - Linda Terry
I left my car at home rode the bus this morning (as I do when my schedule allows it anyway) and will walk home tonight. The ride was free this morning which was a nice perk. I was surprised that there were not more buses though, I got to my stop on Middle Road in Paget at 8:20 and a bus did not arrive until 8:45. The bus was not crowded at all and seemed to be carrying the all usual people. Waiting at the bus stop, there seemed to be the same amount of cars as usual on the road and there was the usual hold up points for traffic on the way into town. I walked my dogs on the railway trail at about 8:00am and saw no walkers, nor did I see any on the road from the bus. I work in an office overlooking Bulls Head car park and whilst there are not quite as many cars on the top level as usual, however, there are some, which indicates that the first three levels of the car park are full. From my observation, this incentive did not seem to be very well supported. Shame because its a great idea. - Annie Sousa
I walked to work this morning and I plan to walk back home at the end of the day.
I walked from Lighthouse Lane (just across from the Gibb's Hill Lighthouse) - stepping off at 6:45 a.m. and I arrived at work in Hamilton at 8:25 a.m. (1 hr 35 mins). It was a gorgeous morning and an extremely pleasant Walk. - Marilyn Steede
Angela Ferguson & Debra M. Wellman employees at Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute, Devonshire, left Southampton at 6:40 a.m. and walked to work. We arrived to work at 8:45 a.m.
It was a great walk –I was ready to turn around and head back –that’s how good I felt. - Debra M. Wellman
