In 1649, England's King Charles I was beheaded.
In 1968, the Tet or New Year's Offensive began as local Communists, the Viet Cong, and North Vietnamese forces launched surprise attacks against more than 100 South Vietnamese provincial capitals; although the Communists were beaten back, the offensive was seen as a major setback for the US and its allies. A suicide squad was able to penetrate the US embassy in Saigon.
In 1972, 13 Roman Catholic marchers were shot to death in Londonderry, by British paratroopers on what became known as "Bloody Sunday".
