MPs pay tribute to Dr. Stowe
late Dr. Thomas C. Stowe, who died last week.
Dr. Stowe, a former chairman of the Bermuda Dental Board, was remembered as a gentleman and a trailblazer in many areas that once excluded blacks.
"Bermuda has lost a very distinguished citizen,'' Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan said. "I am certain that all members of this honourable House will wish to join me in this expression of heartfelt sympathy to Dr. Stowe's family.'' Sir John said Dr. Stowe "often provided quality dental care to whole generations of families''.
"His commitment to maintaining the highest standards in the dental profession led him to assume the chairmanship of the Bermuda Dental Board of Examiners,'' he said.
Sir John also noted that Dr. Stowe was chairman of Keep Bermuda Beautiful, The Matilda Smith-Williams Home, and a long-term member of the Board of Education.
Dr. Stowe was also honoured by the Bermuda Conference Branch Women's Missionary Society of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and received the Richard Allen Award and an Achievement Award from Newark, New Jersey.
PLP MP Mr. Reginald Burrows , who noted that Dr. Stowe was the first black member of the Hamilton Rotary Club, sent condolences on behalf of the Wilberforce Alumni Association.
He was joined by PLP MP Mr. Stanley Lowe , another member of the Association, who noted that Dr. Stowe was instrumental in bringing distinguished speakers from the US to Bermuda during segregation.
Before retiring, Dr. Stowe also served as a trustee of St. Paul's AME, and a member of the Rent Control Panel.
Opposition Leader Mr. Frederick Wade , who occupies Dr. Stowe's former office, said: "We will miss his presence. He gave Bermuda that old grand style that seems to be passing away from Bermuda society''.
UBP MP the Hon. Clarence Terceira recalled how he first met Dr. Stowe in the 1960s when Dr. Stowe was an examiner on the dentist board.
Dr. Terceira said he became a friend, a role model and "influential in bringing me on to the Dental Board''.
Dr. Terceira also noted that Dr. Stowe died in the middle of writing a book about the history of Flatts Village and its people.
"I'm sure the continuation of that by his daughter, Elaine, will be something worth reading,'' he said.
Dr. Terceira also asked the House to send condolences to the family of the late Mr. Angelo Pimentel.
He described him as a "quiet'' Portuguese farmer who knew his business and worked hard.
PLP MP Mr. Nelson Bascome , who said he was one of Dr. Stowe's clients, associated himself with Sir John's comments.
Mr. Bascome also asked that condolences be sent to the family of the late Mrs.
Agnes Byron of Devonshire.
PLP MP Miss Jennifer Smith asked the House to send congratulations to the Amalgamated Bermuda Union of Teachers who held their tenth annual conference on Friday, Dr. Fred W. Ming who took over as vice president of Development at the Bermuda College, and the winners of the Bermuda Junior Service League's annual secondary schools debate.
UBP MP the Hon. David Saul praised the debating standard of the participants, noting that there were "one or two who could come up here today and not be at loss''.
Miss Smith also asked that a letter of congratulations be sent to Mr.
Clarkston (Hockey) Tankard who recently retired from the Public Works department.
UBP MP the Hon. C.V. (Jim) Woolridge , who also sent condolences to Dr.
Stowe's family, asked that congratulations be sent to Bermuda's national football team and coach Mr. Gary Darrell for their efforts in Jamaica.
"It was only by fate they did not come away with a draw,'' he said. "I would like to think that the House and all of Bermuda is with them in spirit as they take on Canada.'' Shadow Sports Minister Mr. Dennis Lister echoed Mr. Woolridge's remarks about the team and asked that congratulations also go out to Somerset Trojans who retained the Martonmere Cup last week.
He also joined Miss Smith in asking that congratulations be sent to Mr.
Tankard -- "Mayor of Dockyard''.
UBP MP the Hon. Gerald Simons , who joined the House in sending condolences to the family of Dr. Stowe and Mr. Pimentel, asked that a note of congratulations be sent to Creative Associates who organised a charter plane to take more than 100 National Football Team supporters to Jamaica.
PLP MP Mr. Eugene Blakeney asked that condolences be sent to the family of the late Mrs. Thelma Outerbridge "Polly'' Tucker.
UBP MP the Hon. Leonard Gibbons asked for congratulations to be sent to the football team, and Miss Chantelle Simmons who was the overall winner in the Bermuda Youth Library's tenth writing workshop.
