A must read March 31, 2000

Anyone who wants to know what Bermuda will be like once Government "levels the playing field'' should read "Atlas Shrugged'' by Ayn Rand.

Find out what happens when you put limits on corporate leaders by dictating who they can hire, who they can promote, how much they can pay, and how they should run their businesses. It has already started! JOHN GAULT Warwick Guides give thanks March 27, 2000 Dear Sir, On behalf of the Bermuda Girl Guide Association (Eastern District), I would like to take this opportunity to express very sincere thanks to all who played a part in making our recent Musical Concert so successful.

The concert was held at Holy Trinity Church hall on Saturday, March 11 as a district fund-raiser. It was exceptionally well attended and I think it safe to say that the evening would be hard to match in terms of entertainment.

Certainly, from all the applause, the capacity audience thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish! Thanks first and foremost to the Somerset Bridgade Band for a wonderful performance. They played with such heart and gusto, they even had guiders dancing in the aisles at one point! Thanks also to the Brownies and guides who participated -- their performances were in turn hilarious, touching, comical and heart-warming.

Thanks are due to the many patrons for their contributions. I can only apologise if, due to oversight, some names were omitted from the programme.

Thanks also to those many people who worked so hard "behind the scenes'' (too numerous to mention, but you know who you are!). And finally, warm thanks to all who attended -- your enthusiastic reception of all those performing made the entire evening a huge success.

You can be sure we'll be back next year with another concert of similar high calibre, so be prepared! C.S. JANE BIELBY Eastern District Guider Expats, stop the bashing March 22, 2000 Dear Sir, Please allow me a little space in your column to respond to the innumerable amounts of letters regarding expats, Bermuda and Bermudians.

I happen to work for an exempted company in the role of Administrative Assistant, I have been away to college and have an Associate's Degree and am currently working on my Bachelor in Business Administration.

I consider myself a fairly intelligent, respected person as well as a diligent worker. The President of the Company is an expat, being British, I personally have no problem with that whatsoever because I have gained a wealth of knowledge from him, to enhance my future in the business industry, and hopefully go on to bigger and better things.

What is so distressing, is the pickering and bickering. With so many expats writing insulting comments in the local newspaper about Bermuda, Bermudians and the way the Country is run.

My first inclination is if you don't appreciate Bermuda, well then yes, there are other places that you can revert to in the world.

The nasty attitudes of some, not all, expats and the condemnation of Bermudians has to stop, it is causing sour working conditions for both the Bermudian and the foreign worker. So expats, please refrain from insulting Bermuda and her people, and try having a look at your backyard, which I'm sure has to be cleaned also. I know there are political "screw ups'' in your countries too.

The PLP are not a stupid bunch of people, they know the importance of international business to their treasured isles, and I feel what Ms Cox is attempting is to give her blood, whether it be black or white (but her Bermudian sister/brother) a fair share in the work force in Bermuda.

No, I'm sure she does not want all the white expats to go, I believe she has been incorrectly interpreted and people are causing a total "blow up'' for absolutely nothing.

So come on Bermudians and expats lets try and work together in harmony, and stop the Bermuda/expat controversy and lets just do what we have to do harmoniously as a people. After all there is only one race: The human race.

TIRED OF THE CONFUSION City of Hamilton The play's the thing March 30, 2000 Dear Sir, I'm writing again to share yet another wonderful evening by attending the opening night performance of the play Annie staged at the Bermuda High School, accompanied with many proud parents and friends we all watched in awe, as each and every young thespian acted their part with true enthusiasm and pride, like the preceding play's of Oliver and the Wizard Of Oz. Annie was equal in professionalism.

I'm certain each of these students shall be our leaders of tomorrow. Well Done. Principals, that must be mentioned are: And most important Annie played by Laura Fasulo. You were wonderful, along with Annie's friend Sandy played by Kelsey Bacon.

Cutest puppy dog ever. Woof woof. And Daddy Warbucks played by Gillian Henderson and Miss Hannigan played by Meagan Muholland, also the Orphan Chorus and the entire cast, naming but a few.

The entire cast were wonderful. All should stand tall, no matter what role played each was as important as the next, making Annie the success it was. I'm sure also, your teachers and fellow class mates are very proud of each of you.

Plays such as Annie, would not be possible without directors such as Jane Hammond and Kate Ross with their guidance and patience, and the many hours needed to make a play successful.

Once again, to those concerned thank you for the great evening and I look forward to next year.

GORDY GIBBONS Paget Red between the lines March 30, 2000 Dear Sir, Despite repeated requests for Works & Engineering to install traffic calming measures within Flatt's Village, we have either been turned down or ignored.

Our goal for safer conditions for pedestrians and a reduction in the speed limit has never deviated. With this in mind, after three years of frustrating efforts, we thought we would soften our requests to those who are responsible for highway improvements.

On February 9 we wrote to The Hon. W. Alex Scott, Minister of Works and Engineering: "At a recent meeting of the Flatts Development Committee it was suggested the road be painted a "red brick'' colour within Flatts Village, as a temporary measure to the traffic problem.

"This course of action is not intended to be the only answer, however it might help to make people realise they are entering an historic village which, hopefully, will cause them to be more responsible in their driving habits.

"We understand there has been some success in England where this "traffic calming'' surface has been applied. Can we try this?'' Since writing this, we have yet to receive a reply.

However, today we observed in your newspaper, a picture with an under-line caption: "Accident prevention: The new red no-skid surface was installed at the cross walk near the entrance to Francis Patton Primary School over the weekend.

The Works and Engineering Department hopes the red colour will tell motorists they are approaching a school crossing and make them slow down. To my knowledge, this is the first red no-skid surface that has been applied on our roads therefore, we feel certain that Flatts Village must be next! W.A. (TOPPY) COWEN Chairman Flatt's Village Development Committee Trashathon a success Marcy 27, 2000 Dear Sir, The Bermuda College Chapter of the IAAP and the Student Government would like to express their appreciation to the corporate sponsors and individual donors who supported our Trashathon 2000 on Saturday, March 25.

Our work this year was conducted in the Hamilton and St. George's parishes.

Over 110 bags of garbage were collected along with old tyres, oil containers, sheet metal, household furnishings, and a water pressure tank.

Over 80 percent of the litter was from beer bottles with another ten percent being aluminium cans and plastics (bags, fast food containers and utensils).

The balance of litter was paper and miscellaneous. We thought these figures might be interesting to the public.

Thank you to all who assisted us in this community service project and helped our students raise travel funds for professional conferences.
