Cellular One doesn't care August 21, 1999

Why is it that the Warwick Camp cellular tower is 250 feet high and only has two whip antennas on the top, while the Cellular One towers in Warwick, Scotts Hill have three antennas and are only 40 feet high? Obviously for more dangerous, especially for the children that play in their shadows. Cellular One does not care about people, just profits.

EXPOSED TO RADIATION Warwick Use of babies disgraceful August 23, 1999 Dear Sir, I would like to say that I think it is disgraceful and irresponsible for the new Digital cellular phone adverts to have babies holding and playing with the mobile phones.

Recent US Government studies and surveys have provided evidence that EMF exposure can increase childhood leukaemia and cancer by as much as 4.5 times.

Also if a child had the phone next to their head then, studies have shown an increased risk of brain tumours. One advert had a child with a scholar's cap on. It has also been suspected that EMF exposure leads to learning and concentration difficulties.

The cellular companies openly say they will be placing more towers, and changing to digital. Aren't there any Government regulations or do they have free reign? The public should be made aware of the dangers and the cellular phone companies should be held accountable for the safety of their cellular towers and cellular phones. Phone up a cellular phone company and ask what amount of radiation you are being exposed to, ask for it in writing. You will be surprised at the answer as usually they do not know, and will not give you the information.

CONCERNED CITIZEN Warwick Not protecting the people August 24, 1999 Dear Sir, I think that we who all live in "close proximity'' to these Transmission Towers, should have medical examinations to prove our current physical state of health, just in case. Then go on public record, so that if some damaging health effect occurs, from these potential health hazards, those responsible can and should be held accountable.

What a shame our Government has not protected its people.

TOO CLOSE TO HOME Warwick Thanks for being nice August 5, 1999 Dear Sir, I am a Bermudian who has lived in Toronto, Canada for the last thirty years. I visited my family this July with my guide dog and two children and stayed there for two weeks with my family.

This is the first time that I have brought my dog. I have had a guide dog for the last three and a half years. It is one of the best things that I have ever done for myself. She has made a great difference in my life! I would like to thank the people of Bermuda for their great acceptance of my dog, Storm. We visited a few attractions and also many stores, and a few restaurants. I had no problems whatsoever, no questions were asked! This acceptance made me extremely proud to be a Bermudian, because in Toronto, guide dog owners have trouble sometimes bringing them into some places.

Again I would like to thank the people of Bermuda for their great support.

DIANA BISSETT Toronto, Canada So what if speeders queue August 16, 1999 Dear Sir, It was with amazement that I read in the newspaper a few days ago that the Police had been told, or ordered, to pull back from stopping speeders and other road offenders, and the reasons given for this are far from convincing.

So what if these people have to wait in line outside Magistrates' Court, they have to be taught a lesson, and it seems that every time something is starting to work to solve the many problems on this Island, it is called to a halt.

Even the Magistrate himself seemed to be disappointed to see so few people in his court last week.

Seeing that the government is so short of money. ($7 million) I would have thought that this lucrative source of income would be something to keep up, along with all the unpaid fines, hospital bills, and unlicensed vehicles that have accumulated over the past ten or more years. If all this money was collected promptly there would be no need to hit us with this outrageous new land tax.

SEEING IT AS IT IS Pembroke Dill lost the whole point August 23, 1999 Dear Sir, I wish to refer to the letter to you from Mr. John A.L. Dill, Devonshire, concerning the "Raymanda Davis'' situation.

NOW IT IS A "RACIST'' black/white issue!!!! My god, how pathetic Mr. Dill! You've lost the whole point. Harbouring a grudge against Canada for TEN long years, get over it! Canada is absolutely breathtaking and you have missed out on experiences of a lifetime, because of your bitterness for a once in a lifetime inconvenience to you, you hate "all'' of Canada. And you know the sad part, these Canadian Officials have probably never given you another thought (they believed and probably still do, as I am sure some of our Bermudian mates do, that they were just doing their jobs) and they have moved on with their lives, and you have allowed them to be in the very core of your soul to this very day, allowing you to continue to hate and hold a grudge. How absolutely, absolutely, sad.

Remember, Bermudian officials detain as well, and treat visitors and Bermudians with the same rudeness or politeness whichever mood you are in.

However, I believe that if you are rude you get rude in return, be they whatever race, and yes, Bermuda has its problems too. I was detained three and a half hours (gosh to got (sic) off light only 45 minutes) in the "holding cell'' interrogated and they wanted to but did not strip search me. I held my ground, remained polite and made my demands, being polite and civil the whole time. I was never detained again and won out in them never having to touch me in a strip search. Do I hold disdain for Bermudian Immigration Officials and Bermuda, absolutely not. I keep smiling and put myself above it. All of Bermuda is not like that, and neither is Canada. Take another chance Mr. Dill, you would be very surprised to find out that you will love Canada, and perhaps even like "white'' ones too. Start talking to "Canadians'', learn their stories too, you are being unfair.

Life is too short in this day an age for racism and making this issue now a "black & white'' one is pathetic, lack of follow through on Bermuda's part is the issue and Canada was protecting everyone concerned. Make sure Mr. Dill that you don't eat your words, someday you may require medical treatment, or your grandchildren may wish to be educated in Canada and Canada may be just the wonderful place you will get it, and most probably make a friend or two along the way, be they white or black.

Don't let an experience of ten years ago ruin the rest of your life, it is not worth it. Really it is not! I am Bermudian born with a Canadian Mum, with a Canadian heritage of love and respect, who is the most wonderful "black'' human being you could ever have the honour of meeting.

BERMUDIAN Paget Careful throwing stones August 20, 1999 Dear Sir, I wish to hear more about the "Serial Rapist'' in Canada. The husband and wife who destroyed over 30-odd women and their lives.

I don't remember seeing it on the Internet, telling people to boycott Canada.

And how the Police screwed-up the evidence, and case, and had to make a deal with the wife, in order to convict this man. I guess they forgot to mention it. How dare you attack my country, my people and our livelihood!! It sounds as if you people have problems also -- severe problems. I don't remember seeing anything about the rapist on "A&E''. Yet, you complain that it was not detailed enough. What are you seeking now, "A Grammy or Movie Rights''? Let us turn our attention to the 30-odd women, that are suffering also. Don't they count? I pity you people. It is easier to attack another country and choose to ignore your own. Be careful how you throw stones at glass houses, it might be your own.
