Contingency fees wrong
Dear Sir, I refer to a letter published in the `Letters to the Editor' column on June 3, 1999 signed Spanish Point Voter. I would make the following comment for the benefit of the writer of the above referred letter regarding contingency fees.
The Barristers' Code of Professional Conduct 1981 -- Rule 96 reads: "Except in respect of undefended debt collections or to an extent expressly permitted by the Bar Council, a barrister shall not enter into contingent fee arrangements under which his fees depend upon the results of a case or consist of a pre-arranged share of money recovered on behalf of a client.'' Should Spanish Point Voter in fact have evidence of a breach of the above stated rule he/she should report the matter in writing to the Bar Council for investigation.
RICHARD A. HECTOR President Bermuda Bar Association Let motorcycles race June 1, 1999 Dear Sir, Once again, we have been denied the opportunity to put on an exciting motorcycle show by The Corporation of Hamilton. In the past, the Bermuda Land Development Company did not allow us to have spectators until late January of this year, and only allowed us to have two motorcycles on the track at any one time. This was clearly not beneficial to the riders or spectators to be fully realised and enjoyed.
Since then, the Bermuda Karting Club have put on an exciting event on Front Street and look forward to doing another one next year. This is clear bias against motorcycles in Bermuda. Why allow one form of motor sport and not the other? Before the Bermuda Karting Club was able to stage its event, we tried last year to put on a drag race and was denied. Since then, the Bermuda Karting Club were able to go straight ahead without any problems, there is clearly something wrong here, please make me understand.
Corporation Secretary Mr. Roger Sherratt and the Police talk about the danger involved. I have assured them that it would be a safe race and there would be safety measures taken for each race. I would say that our motorcycle show would be less dangerous than the Bermuda Karting Club because there would only be one or two motorcycles on the course at any one time, as opposed to ten or more karts which were seen at the karting race.
Also, for the merchants who have shops on Front Street, if anything, this would generate even more revenue then they would ever expect on any other Sunday, for instance Harbour Nights. Let me say this, the black and white issue has already been emphasised over and over by others to me and I must admit this has crossed my mind many times before. If this is true, then now is the time to put a stop to it. We are going into a new Millennium with a new political party and new ideas and this just happens to be one of mine.
I thank you once again for taking the time to listen and I hope, like many others that something positive will happen in the near future.
DAVID JONES SR.
Chairman/Organiser Bermuda Motorcycle Road Racing Club Cars add to congestion June 8, 1999 Dear Sir, This topic appeared in your paper on June 7, 1999: "Decision on electric cars expected soon.'' If this article is referring to the possible legalisation of the two-seater type electric car and if we give permission to the tourist to use them, then the general public should be able to rent and/or purchase them for our own personal use. Therefore, they should not be approved because we are already experiencing the problem of "vehicular congestion'' of our roads.
REVVED UP & READY Pembroke Don't be fooled by PPP May 28, 1999 Dear Sir, "All the labour of men is for his mouth, but Godliness with contentment is great gain for we bought nothing into this world and it is certain we can carry nothing out. Having food and water let us be content, worry not about evil doers nor be envious against those who are wealthy, for you know not where their wealth cometh from. Remember oppression make a wise man mad. Judge they neighbour through righteousness. Remember that wisdom giveth lift to them that have it.'' My Brothers and sisters there is no gold, oil or silver in Bermuda, therefore those who are wealthy had to get wealth by other means.
The stock market crash of 1929 was put into place by bankers and others, including accountants. In Bermuda, there does not seem to be any network within seeking to build a just society. What we have is a lot of condescending speeches by those UBP MPs that are still in Parliament who for the most part are right wing extremists pretending to be liberals who are trying to hijack the PLP. My black brothers do not be fooled by those in the PPP or Pathetic Political Party.
RAYMOND RUSSELL Pembroke Origin of `Joey Brown' June 1, 1999 Dear Sir, I have known about a good number of famous comedians over many years such as Bill Cosby, Red Fox, Nipsy Russell, Flip Wilson and before them Eddie Rochester and Stepin Fetchit among the black. Among the white: Allan King and before him were Fred Allen, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Red Skelton, Abbott & Costello, The Three Stooges.
This letter is to offer information in regard to the write-up by the Bermuda Sun June 4, 1999 on the late revered Mr. Leon York "Joey Brown''. Through the association of my oldest brother Allan (Hot) Tuzo who was a born comedian himself, and Mr. York who was about the same age, there was a white comedian actor named Joe E. Brown.
I myself saw him in movies at the Colonial Opera House. Mr. York liked this man's jokes so much that friends gave him the name of Joe E. Brown. As time went by it turned into Joey Brown.
