Editorial contortions April 14th, 2000

I was dismayed and disappointed by the casual disregard for the facts reflected in your editorial of Friday, April 14.

As a long-standing reader of The Royal Gazette's Editorial Page, I have often found the editorials to be insightful and well researched. Friday's editorial was an obvious exception and stood in stark contrast to the historically responsible journalism one has become accustomed to find on Page 4.

Please note the following catalogue of facts which your editorial of April 14 either overlooked or mistook: Fact: The speaker of the House of Assembly did not request an apology from me for any comment that was made in reference to the Premier.

Fact: Minister Nelson Bascome did not accuse me of using un-parliamentary language.

Fact: I never referred to the Premier as "a spoilt Princess'' By simply referring to The Royal Gazette' lead story of April 8, which was considerably more accurate than your editorial, you could have avoided these errors and the consequent disservice your editorial did to the community and to me.

One wonders what causes such a lapse. It would appear, at times, that the editorial position of late is that of a circus contortionist. First, the head swivels away from the real action so that hard news stories don't have to be covered.

A perfect example was your failure to write a single editorial sentence condemning the Attorney General's shameful and unprovoked racist remarks to the Hon. Kim Young on March 24th.

Second, the torso bends at the waist in an ungainly effort top "bend over backwards'' in an attempt to be seen to display fairness to both the Government and the Opposition. The problem with "bending over backwards'' Mr.

Editor is that you get your facts upside down.

HON. PAMELA F, GORDON LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION
