Meaning of child support July 31, 2000

Listed below is what I believe is the real definition of Child Support. I address this letter to every Mother, Father, Grandparent, Godparent, Uncle and Aunt, as they are all part of a child's life in one way or another whether by choice or not.

C Communicate, Care for and Cherish your children H Honour your duties as parents I Interact and Inspire your children L Love your children with all your heart D Devote and Dedicate yourselves as parents S Be Steadfast and Share responsibilities U Show Understanding and Unite as parents P Participate as much as possible P Provide sensibly for the present and the future O Be Obliging and Observant R Respect one another as parents T TEAMWORK -- Self explanatory As an active and supportive Grandmother, I am encouraging my daughter to live by the above, but it takes both parents for it to work.

JANES Pembroke Put Cup Match first August 10, 2000 Dear Sir, I am not the only one adversely affected by the headline in the Saturday 5, 2000 issue of The Royal Gazette . This concerned a story about the Daniel's Head tourist project being uncomfortable for an American couple. It was most ridiculous to have such a headline the day following such a successful Cup Match. This should have been by far the main headline instead of taking second place to the tourist story.

I don't know whether it was intentional to de-emphasise Cup Match or lessons have to be learned on how to operate a daily newspaper. Thousands of people, black and a big increase of white, were very satisfied that their money had been well spent having patronised and tuned in to the greatest event on the calendar for this Country. It should not have been second to anything else we did not have a killing or other horrendous activity to report.

I have read the speeches made on behalf of the Press but the only daily should promote our successes better in the country.

My compliments on the pictures that were in.

ROSS TUZO Warwick Learn to drive safely August 6, 2000 Dear Sir, Please allow me to use this space to express my outrage to the driver of a car on August 6, 2000. Not only did you feel the need to overtake my car, but two others as well as a truck. You then had to push your way back into the line of traffic, but only for a few seconds, before you proceeded to overtake even more vehicles, whilst a motorbike was heading towards you in the oncoming lane. What do you think you are teaching the child who was sitting in the backseat of your car? It's drivers like you who end up killing innocent others like myself. Hasn't our Island seen enough senseless road fatalities over the years -- when will you learn? OUTRAGED DRIVER AND PARENT Devonshire Of dogs and seat belts August 7, 2000 Dear Sir, I have just received my Monthly Bulletin for the Department of Agriculture & Fisheries. There is a paragraph in the bulletin that I think applies to why we do not need seat belts. It says the muzzling of dogs was debated heavily but for the time being, the idea was rejected because...the law would "punish'' a large number of well-trained, sociable dogs who are owned by law-abiding owners.

I say the same applies to law-abiding drivers. Why should the majority be constrained with a seatbelt when there are a few poor drivers creating the problem along with the lack of proper policing.

20 MILES PER HOUR Paget Tired of harassment August 2, 2000 Dear Sir, I should be happy this morning as it is the day before Cup Match. I should be looking forward to my four-day holiday weekend, and instead I am in a foul mood. I have just arrived at work, which unfortunately is located on Par-la-Ville Road adjacent to the Crown House construction site.

For close to a year now, my female co-workers and I have had to suffer the humiliation of being hooted and hollered at by various construction labourers and contractors working at this site. In fact, any woman wandering down the street past their lair is open game for verbal harassment. This type of abuse toward women in Bermuda has been ongoing and almost accepted for years at any location where small pockets of testosterone gather -- and this morning I'm officially Fed Up with it.

Today's incident started as I made my way through the parking lot behind Buckaroo Restaurant towards my company's office in Mintflower Place. The semi-polite "G'mornin'' that each worker yells is a trap -- responding invites further comments on one's appearance and requests for one's name. This has a snowball effect because as soon as one labourer makes "progress'' by getting past the greeting stage, all of them jump in on the prey until traffic is stopped by the disturbance. Ignoring a greeting as I did this morning results in even more dire consequences. Today I was repeatedly told to smile, and when I did not cooperate, I was called derogatory names and remarks were very loudly made on what I must have done (or rather did not do) last night. I was also told I should lose my guy as he was obviously not making me happy, and that apparently all the workers on that site were eligible bachelors eager to show me how a real man treats his woman.

In direct response to the vocalists next door -- a hardhat, construction boots and a layer of cement dust does not make you Adonis. Believe it or not, the ritualistic yelling that you feel you must all participate in will not get your anywhere with any virtuous woman. She will not fall at your feet, tell you her name or tell you her number. No woman is put on this earth for the sole purpose of smiling for your viewing pleasure. Maintain some dignity and have respect for your own ladies at home -- you know how you would react if someone harassed your wife, daughter, sister or mother. And I hope in your next life you are reincarnated as women so you know how it feels.

To the employing contractors -- did it cross your mind that this job could have been finished long ago if you had put blinders on your labourers? Know that how your employees behave is a direct reflection on you and could damage a reputation.

To my fellow female counterparts -- keep your heads up. I guess the struggle continues! There are men out there who know how to treat a lady, and hopefully the boneheads next door and at any construction site will learn from them. And when they get under your skin so much that you arrive at the same foul mood I was in, do something about it.

LYNETTE POWELL Hamilton Parish Exploitation will continue August 2, 2000 Dear Sir, One of the great errors of backward socialist thinking that condemns people to poverty is to blame those who exploit their knowledge to add value to manufacture products and make great wealth.

We need to learn that it is the value and power of knowledge that are the real sources of prosperity not the natural and diminishing resources of Bermuda as those who have economic power would have us to believe. Isn't it interesting that Bermuda with few natural resources is more prosperous than those with abundance? Little do Bermudians understand that they will be exploited by people with a wealth of knowledge which represents value extracted from rather than value created. It appears that exploitation by banks, legal firms, accountants etc.

will increase under our PLP Government. Our laws need to be researched and changed.
