GRAND TURK, Turks and Caicos Islands (AP) — Tourism is returning to Grand Turk as the island recovers from Hurricane Ike.
The cruise ship Carnival Destiny made a port call last Wednesday and brought some 2,800 passengers to the capital of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Premier Michael Misick greeted arriving passengers and posed with them for photos.
It's the first cruise ship in Grand Turk since Ike swept across the island on September 7 and damaged 80 percent of the homes.
The storm also damaged the island's cruise ship terminal, halting the main source of tourists for Grand Turk. The terminal is owned by Miami-based Carnival Corp.
The island chain's deputy premier says recovery has been slow and only 10 percent of Grand Turk has power.
