Bad attitude to accident

August 17, 2010

Dear Sir,

My wife and I have been coming to Bermuda and enjoying ourselves for over 20 years. Last year we decided to also celebrate Christmas here. We arrived on December 25. The following day we went shopping at Miles Market on Pitts Bay Road in Pembroke where I, unfortunately slipped and fell on some soup which had been spilt near the salad bar and had not been cleaned up. I was injured and taken by ambulance to the hospital where I was examined, X-rayed, given a prescription for the pain and released. Due to the severe pain in my chest and back, I had to return to the hospital on December 26. I was again examined and again given a prescription for the pain.

Due to my condition we had to shorten our vacation and return to our home in New Jersey.

No one from Miles ever contacted us to offer an apology for the accident or to show any concern for my condition.

We contacted the Miles Company to possibly recover some of the expenses that we had incurred from the accident, which was not my fault or responsibility. We received a reply from their insurance company, stating that Miles was not liable or responsible in any way for what happened. According to them, I, therefore, was totally responsible for my accident. The insurance company's and probably Miles' viewpoint too, is that just because the store created the hazard by failing to clean up the spilt soup, which caused me to fall and injure myself, the store had no responsibility in the incident.

I was in pain for six weeks. It would have been a goodwill gesture if the insurance company had paid a modest amount for my pain and suffering. Their attitude leaves a tourist in a very precarious position when an accident from neglect occurs at a Bermuda place of business.

After more than 20 years of visiting and enjoy your country, this attitude expressed by the Miles Company, greatly surprised and disappointed us, as I am sure it would any other tourist or Bermudian.

Clarifying Blakeney's words

September 9, 2010

Dear Sir,

Please allow me to clarify statements made by MP Glenn Blakeney concerning the installment of the bus stop at Prospect Primary and other issues concerning the area. As a resident of Cedar Park we have been lobbying Government for the past 10 years to have a bus stop, shelter, speed bumps, closing in the fencing for the school installed and other serious concerns fixed.

Senator Michael Dunkley and former MP for the area has also tried. Mr. John Barritt has tried to have these various concerns addressed. As a concerned resident of the area for fighting to get these concerns done the folks I would like to thank Prospect PTA, Mr. J. Barritt MP, Sen. M. Dunkley, Mr. Flood P.R. School and former successful chairman of Frog Lane Condo Association.

I may by saying that there have been quite a few accidents in the area on an almost weekly occurrence. MP Blakeney stated he's not aware of accidents is totally untrue and misleading. He has been informed of all the above reports.
