VISITOR'S VIEW
Helpful Bermudians
October 20, 2010
Dear Sir,
As I pack to leave Boston for Bermuda tomorrow and my friend Anne packs to leave Ottawa to join me in Bermuda, I recall a kind act supplied by a Bermudian that I failed to acknowledge earlier. Actually I'm almost one year late in writing.
We spend two weeks vacation time each October on your beautiful island. Last year, while we were riding our rental scooter (me driving and Anne riding) we were on Malabar Road headed to Dockyard when the rear tyre blew. I coasted to a stop and with Anne's help, I began to push the disabled scooter off the road. Almost immediately, a local person stopped and came to our aid. He offered assistance and telephoned the rental company. After checking to see that everything was OK, with us he left and after about 20 minutes a replacement scooter arrived.
While waiting for the replacement, two other Bermudians came by and asked if we needed assistance. We send many thanks, somewhat belated, to the fine citizens of Bermuda.
We are an older couple. I proceed very carefully and concentrate fully on driving and always think through in advance where I want to be at the upcoming intersections. I was able to gain Bermuda driving experience during the 1980s and early 1990s when I was a regular runner in the January 10K road races. I consider driving in Bermuda a responsibility and a pleasure.
