The community is reeling today from the murder of 14-year-old Rhiana Moore this weekend.

It is far too early to say how she died, and Police are being more than usually circumspect about the details of the case.

It goes without saying that the whole community's condolences go to Rhiana's family.

What is critical at this stage is that the Police perform their duty and devote all the resources necessary to determining who her killer was and to bringing that person to justice.

Too many murders have gone unsolved in Bermuda in the past, and apart from the reality of having murderers running free in the streets, it is critical for the family to know how their child died and that justice has been done.

For the community at large, it would be easy to take this death and to apply it to broader ills in society. It is too early to do this until more is known about this case.

What can and must be done is that anyone who has any information at all that may lead to the successful arrest and conviction of Rhiana's killer must be provided to the Police. They cannot be expected to do their job unless they have the help and support of the community. In Rhiana's memory, that is the least we can do.
