Making a difference

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1).Everyday educators enter the classroom with the hope that what we do will make a difference in the life of at least one of our students. Without this unwavering optimism, each day would be a struggle.Yet, in talking with some of my students recently, hope is not just limited to educators but is also held by students.

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1).

Everyday educators enter the classroom with the hope that what we do will make a difference in the life of at least one of our students. Without this unwavering optimism, each day would be a struggle.

Yet, in talking with some of my students recently, hope is not just limited to educators but is also held by students.

Students hope that :

? The classroom environment is supportive

? The teacher is prepared with activities that stimulate and stretch thinking

? The school will reward athletic and academic excellence

? Parents become more involved and committed to seeing the completion of an academic journey, especially at the middle and high school level.

As students articulated these thoughts, I said: "Wow!"

Then, in reflection, I smiled.

The difference is being made. If students feel comfortable enough to verbalise their expectations to ensure they are benefiting from the experience, then we are making a difference.
