No-cape heroes

Superheroes are characteristically stronger than most. They can do the seemingly impossible. And most importantly, they do so without complaint.

As the commentator on the movie The Incredibles stated: "There are heroes among us."

To me, the unsung heroes in the education system are the men and women who sometimes do not receive the acclamations they deserve – administrative assistants, para-educators and custodians. These educators provide supports so that classroom instruction can take place.

In many cases, these men and women are the first to receive the verbal abuse of an irate parent, or listen to the varied complaints of teachers, or witness the social challenges between our children. Yet, they still come to school, ready to take on whatever the day has in store for them.

While all are I admit that there are some that are not as diligent in their duties as others, those whom I have had the pleasure of working with have been nothing short of great. They do not wear capes but their contribution to our education system is just as noteworthy.

A public school has, as part of its school creed, "So many hands make a home, so many hearts make a school." The no-cape heroes help to make the schools what they are.

So to those who help me do my job better - thank you!
