Our valuable resource
Recently my daughters helped their school as part of the KBB clean up. They were excited to pick up trash. When I asked why they wanted to do it, one commented "because I want Bermuda to be clean" while others stated "somebody has to do it, why not me?".
Often we, as adults, wonder what is happening in the education system. We sit around coffee tables, in front of the evening news, or at family gatherings, bemoaning the results that are seen. Yet many fail to consider 'how can I help?'
Schools have open door policies where they eagerly encourage parental and community involvement. As I have mentioned before, still many do not visit. There are several mentor programmes which provide opportunities for individuals to connect with students in the schools. They are always looking for volunteers.
If you have a child in the education system, you only need to ask if help is required. President Obama declared a National Day of Service on September 11, 2009. I want to encourage Bermuda to let our service be year round and let it begin with an investment of time in our most valuable resource — our children!
