The Figo is ‘built for Bermuda’s roads’

The Ford Figo is reliable . . . and affordable.

You’re not a Top Gear-loving petrolhead who knows or cares whether a car has fantastic torque, rear torsion beam suspension, enhanced optimal drive or lots of hi-tech features and gizmos. All you want is a reliable, easy-to-drive car that will get you safely and comfortably from A to B, and won’t break the bank. The good news is that you’re not alone. Which is why Ford in addition to producing sophisticated vehicles like Mustangs, Explorers and Galaxys, also builds cars like the Figo. The Figo might be short on a few frills no keyless entry, sport mode, or hands-free Bluetooth, for example but the 5-door hatchback will more than fit the bill for a lot of drivers. The 1600cc automatic is compact, affordable and it does exactly what it says on the tin without any fuss.First released in 2009, the Figo has proved a big hit and now sells in 15 countries, including Bermuda for the first time. Amongst its many industry awards, the Figo was this year voted Indian Car of the Year and was runner up in the South African Car of the Year Awards. The Figo’s lack of pretension is certainly a virtue and of course, it’s still a Ford. More specifically it shares the same no-nonsense Ford setup and mechanical and design DNA as the Fusion and the last generation Fiesta. In other words, you’re getting a car that is fundamentally as well built and reliable as more expensive models. But while the Figo doesn’t pretend to be fancy, it’s not exactly short on style and features either. Indeed, the name “Figo” is colloquial Italian for “cool” and the bold, dynamic lines and full surfaces reflect Ford’s “kinetic design” philosophy of “energy in motion”.It’s roomy for a compact, thanks in part to the high roofline, and the quality Ford body build, combined with front and rear crumple zones, driver and front passenger air bags, safety belt pretensioners, and Anti-Lock Brake System help make the Figo safe as well as fun to drive. The cockpit is sensibly laid out with instruments that are easy to read and controls within easy reach. The centre console features a CD/Radio system as well as an input jack for your iPod, a 12-volt accessory power outlet and a cup holder. There’s ample space in the front door pockets for a litre bottle of water too.Other standard features include air conditioning, power-assisted steering, 14-inch steel wheels, central locking and Passive Anti-Theft System. The large rear hatch opening makes it easy to load up the trunk’s 284 litres (10 cubic feet) capacity. Fold the rear seat back and the cargo space increases to 947 litres (33 cubic feet).Michael Butler, general manager of local Ford dealers Bermuda Motors, said: “The Figo is built for Bermuda’s roads. It’s compact but very comfortable to drive and easy to maneuver which makes it a great car for getting in and around Hamilton. I think people will be surprised how much leg and headroom there is and in this segment, it certainly represents good value for money.”When it comes down to basics, the Ford Figo certainly has everything covered. The Class C Ford Figo is priced from $26,000 and is available from Bermuda Motors, Church Street East, Hamilton.
