Share in the holiday spirit by:1) Pick up an extra item and drop it off in the box at any MarketPlace Grocery Store.2) Buy a children’s gift to donate to Toys for Tots3) Buy gifts from a charitable organisation or community group.4) Make a donation in memory of a loved one to a charity that they supported when they were alive. Need help making a decision? Contact the Centre on Philanthropy (www.centreonphilanthropy.org) for assistance.5) Ask friends and family to make a donation to a favourite charity on your behalf, in lieu of presents.6) Have your kids go through their old toys and clothes that could be donated to a charity or a needy family before new Christmas goodies arrive under the tree.7) Buy your Christmas tree from a local youth or community group.8) Find ways to reduce your ecological footprint by reducing the waste you create in the form of gift wrap, and serve locally grown food.9) Consider searching out pre-loved items for children, rather than buying new items that will lose their attention in a few short months.10) Organise a non-party Christmas party instead of spending money on the dinner and decorations, the money can instead be used to donate towards a favourite charity.11) Purchase gifts from local artists.12) Donate blood.13) Check in with elderly neighbours to see if they need some help around the house, whether to do basic chores or to help decorate their homes for the holidays. Don’t forget to stop in after the holidays to take down and store those decorations, too!14) Offer an afternoon off for a single-mom or a caregiver to an elderly or disabled person, so that they can get out and do their shopping for the holidays.15) Send a note of thanks to those who really take care of you nurses, police officers, EMTs, fire fighters, garbage men, postmen, teachers and pastors.16) Check out crafty websites like Pinterest to find cool ways to up-cycle old items into new gifts for friends and loved ones.17) Drop a few dollars in a Salvation Army pot! Better yet, set aside a jar on your nightstand and drop in spare change throughout the year, that can then be donated at Christmas time.18) Attend school and community Christmas concerts and productions.19) Make it a new year’s resolution to give a couple of hours every month to volunteering with a charity. Visit volunteer.bm to help you connect with different groups across the island.20) Give a family you know the gift of a membership at one of our local societies, like BAMZ, BUEI, the National Trust, or the National Museum of Bermuda.21) Go Christmas caroling in your neighbourhood, or to sick and shut-ins that you know through your church or at a seniors centre.22) Adopt a family in need help them by inviting them for dinner, taking the kids out for a fun activity, wrapping a few extra gifts for under the tree, and really getting to know them through the year.23) Sponsor a child through World Vision.24) Organise a toy, food or clothing drive at work.25) Become a Christmas angel to the child of a prisoner through Prison Fellowship’s Angel Tree.
