Travelling with Kids
Make sure to be prepared for travelling before you set off during the holidaysPacking for your tripBefore packing anything, make sure to check with your airline’s luggage restrictions, as these vary from carrier to carrier, as well as depend on whether your child has a reserved seat or not. Also, restrictions can sometimes change from time to time, so what was okay last year, may not be okay this year.Parents with newborns in arms are generally allowed to check in a car seat, to gate check a stroller, and carry on one bag for the child. Some airlines also allow you to check in one carry-on-sized bag for your infant.Plan in advance what you are going to be taking, making sure to bring items appropriate for the location and weather. Remember, it never hurts to pack your children’s raincoats, no matter what the season!Carry-onBe sure to always pack at least one spare outfit (including underwear!), as well as a pair of pajamas, so they are ready at hand. For babies, make sure you have diapers to spare as well as plenty of formula, bottles and baby food. Baby wipes and empty zipper storage bags are a must, no matter what the age of your children.Likewise, it is important to pack snacks for each child. You may also want to consider having a new surprise treat that your child can find in their bag.Be sure to carry all prescription medications aboard with you. Again, liquid items and creams need to be stored in a clear plastic bag that is easily accessible for security checks.Online check-insMake use of your carrier’s website to check-in in advance, inputting passport details and the like, as this will make your time at the main check-in much faster. When you get thereCall the hotel directly (not the general booking number) the day before you travel to confirm that they will have extras like a cot or crib set up in your room before you arrive.Take into account how much walking you are going to do. Older toddlers, while they may not use a stroller at home, may need one when you are traipsing across a big city.Planning a night out on the town? Contact the hotel directly, in advance of your arrival, about booking a qualified and vetted babysitter.Eat, sleep and be merryDon’t forget, not only little ones need their rest. Be sure to take care of yourself, too, by eating healthfully, drinking lots of water and getting sufficient sleep yourself. For tips on travel regulations and travelling with children, check out the Transport Security Administration’s website at: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children
