Join in a Billion Acts of Green for Earth Day

Enter your video in the Earth Day Student Video Competition.

There are many ways to celebrate Earth Day from small, everyday changes to larger, community wide collaborations. And Bermudians can feel a greater sense of connection to the billions of others who take part in events surrounding Earth Day, which is celebrated on April 22, as local events that are registered through Greenrock’s recently launched web portal will be linked to the international Earth Day Network.“Rather than having one big event we wanted to gather community-sourced events,” explains Judith Landsberg, Greenrock’s president. “People can register any event around Earth Day on our portal.”Some ideas for events include organising an Earth Day hike, bike, walk, run or swim; take part in a KBB cleanup or organise your own beach or neighbourhood cleanup, or invite a Green speaker or local environmentalist to speak to a school or group.“It’s about coming to action in the spirit of Earth Day,” Dr Landsberg says. “And because these are community-sourced events they can happen from Sandys to St George’s and everyone can still feel part of the day.”With the creation of the charity’s new web portal, Bermuda’s events will also be registered with the Earth Day Network and count towards their Billion Acts of Green. One of the events surrounding Earth Day that Greenrock is currently engaged in is the first Student Video Competition in partnership with the Bermuda National Trust. This is the last weekend for students to get their videos in the best shape as the competition closes on Tuesday, April 10.“This is an opportunity to give students a voice using the same forum that they use to talk to their peers,” explains Dr Landsberg.“We as Greenrock have a very specific viewpoint so we have been very excited to see what the students’ viewpoints are and what is important to them. It’s a great way to connect students to their environment and feel they have an impact.”The winners of the competition will receive prizes including a whale watching trip, and the films will be presented at school assemblies and plans for a public viewing are currently underway. For more information on entering the competition visit www.bnt.bm or www.greenrock.org.To register your Earth Day event with Greenrock visit http://greenrock.org/earthday.
