XL staff prepare for Day of Giving

A second Global Day of Giving has been organised by XL Capital for tomorrow and amongst the projects being lined up in Bermuda is the painting of a home of Habitat for Humanity, assisting with a marine and beach clean-up, refurbishing a children's home and other activities.

The company held its first day of giving last June to mark the 20th anniversary of the company, which is headquartered in Hamilton.

It is expected that employees of XL around the world will donated over 20,000 hours of community service to more than 200 charitable projects in countries where it operates.

President and chief executive officer Brian O'Hara said: "I am pleased that we are once again committing to a global volunteer day to support initiatives and programmes within our local communities. Our efforts last year were a success and drew such a tremendous response, boosting our employee volunteerism, that we decided to repeat the event again this year."

In Bermuda, around 350 people (75 percent of the staff) have committed to help, while others are not able to participate because of travel or business priorities. Projects on the Island include:

[bul] Planting native/endemic plants and removing invasive species at Cooper's Island, Bermuda's nature reserve with Save Open Spaces (SOS) and Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences.

[bul] Painting the grounds at Windreach and clearing out/restoring cabins in preparation for a special needs group visiting in May.

[bul] Painting, grounds and office maintenance and tree planting at the Aquarium & Zoo.

Partnering with the Bermuda chapter of Habitat for Humanity, painting a home in Pembroke

[bul] Clearing, installing shelving and painting theme walls for Southampton Glebe school's new library.

[bul] Cleaning, painting, installing computers and creating a tranquil environment for a children's room at the Physical Abuse Centre.

[bul] Cleaning, painting and restoring the exterior and interior of Beacon House, the base for the Bermuda Society for the Blind, for a second year in a row. XL's projects across the world include revamping a children's room at a hospital in Argentina where children with cancer are treated, tree planting in Australia, helping with educational activities for orphans in India, bringing school children to the XL offices in Ireland to learn about the workplace environment and assisting with food banks and gardening projects in New York.

Other activities are lined up in Pennsylvania, Singapore and Switzerland.
