BPML: Ten years of helping with the challenges of construction

From involvement in the construction of the impressive Ace headquarters to the award-winning Maxwell Roberts building, the staff of Bermuda Project Managers Ltd. have played a part in shaping the Island's landscape.

This month marks the 10th anniversary of the company's formation and it has grown from an essentially two-man operation to employing 11 people dedicated to helping manage projects — big and small — from initial concept, through construction, to completion.

Coming up with novel and effective solutions has included the underground boardroom at the BF&M offices, which was dreamt up by the Bermuda Project Managers' team as a preferable solution to having the boardroom in a separate building.

It was made possible after a unusual deal was created to move the building's water tank to a neighbouring plot.

Similarly the PXRE company was saved the hassle of splitting its offices on either side of the road by a more thought-out design proposal worked out by BPML.

The project management company is independent and does not work with contractors or suppliers. It listens to the project parameters and then provides management solutions to control costs, develop the project and advise clients of any risks or potential oversights.

Directors Ian Feathers and Adam Hawley describe the Bermudiana Road-based company as bringing greater clarity, management and streamlining of projects from start to finish.

That can involve everything from preparing briefs and realistic budgets to quantity and building surveying, construction, engineering and arbitration.

The company has also done due diligence and feasibility studies for Bermuda banks who are lending capital for projects.

"We help clients understand what their goals are, because a lot of the time people don't and we have to figure out what they are really looking for," said Mr. Feathers.

Over the years he and Mr. Hawley have seen projects become bigger and more complex.

"The parameters are getting more complicated. The level of sophistication in buildings is such that we can have 11 design consultants involved in one building," said Mr. Feathers.

"Helping clients streamline their projects, keep them on budget and ensure they are completed on time is what we do."

As evidence there is the recently completed Maxwell Roberts building, which houses the Bermuda Stock Exchange on the corner of Par-La-Ville Road and Church Street. BPML were project managers there.

"That building was completed early, under budget and won a design award," said Mr. Feathers.

Fellow director Mr. Hawley explained that coming up with custom solutions was essential because no two projects are the same.

He said: "This company was created to help customers manage the project process in terms of time, cost and quality. We understand people's parameters and what they want to achieve."

For smaller budget projects BPML provide "coaching" as an alternative to its full consultancy service, with design development, construction documentation, tender negotiation overseeing construction and end of warranty period completion.

Ten years on and the company is still growing. Trainee Keino Williams has just graduated and is on his way to becoming proficient in design and building surveying.

The firm thrives because it fills an important role and has a successful track record. Mr. Feathers said: "We get things right because we are careful. We see what the risks are and we give good advice."

And Messrs Feathers and Hawley love their work. Mr. Hawley said: "No two days are the same. It is exciting and we like what we do."
