24-year-old is driven to achieve Positive Results

Sergio White: The 24-year-old new owner of Positive Results health and wellness studio.

When Andy Soucie put the Positive Results health and wellness studio in Pembroke up for sale he was adamant he would not let it go to anyone not committed to keeping it as a personal trainer-led fitness gym.

That business philosophy was a perfect fit for Sergio White, who has spent the best part of the past four years as a personal trainer at another gymnasium.

He had dreamt of owning and running his own gym, then everything came together with Positive Results when he met Mr. Soucie and struck a deal.

All fitness studio clients sign up with a personal trainer for either half-hour or one-hour sessions that develop into an ongoing fitness programme.

That is something Mr. White, who at 24 is also The Bermuda Regiment's physical training instructor, believes in. The four personal trainers currently at the studio will shortly increase to five and possibly six by the end of summer.

"The training is on a one-to-one basis. The trainer will design the programme to suit the goal," he said.

"You can't come here on your own, you must have a trainer. A lot of people say that if they didn't have a trainer they would not show up and would not be motivated enough. But if they know there is someone waiting for them and they have paid for a session then they will come."

The new owner studied in Delaware with the National Personal Training Institute. He put that training into practice at the Athletic Club. In 2006 he assisted with the fitness training for Bermuda's World Cup cricket team. He is already enjoying the challenge of guiding the fitness studio, which is at the junction of Woodlands Road and St. John's Road. Among the team is founder and previous owner Mr. Soucie who, for now, is continuing as a personal trainer.

"My concept is to keep it to personal training and not open on a gym basis. Gyms do not focus on the client. It is not just to do with fitness here," Mr. White said.

Mr. White has visions for what else he would like to achieve, such as school programmes to help combat obesity and group fitness arrangements.

He also has his Regiment commitments, which include an exercise in the UK's Brecon Beacons this summer, to reach his sergeant rank.

Having come up through the public school system, Mr. White is happy to continue to pack his life with self-made achievements that have lifted him to the status of business owner at such a young age.

"I have always wanted to own a gymnasium. I've faced a lot of challenges but I've always said it is up to me to make a difference. When I met Andy he said he could see the drive in me. It is all about doing something positive, and if you don't love what you are doing then that is not the job for you," he explained.

Since opening in 1999, Positive Results has made a success from creating a friendly atmosphere that is non-intimidating for maturing and older clients, men and women.

It attracts people from all walks of life, including business people, executive types and even members of Parliament.

"People love to come here because they have their trainer and it feels like home to them."

Personal training sessions at Positive Results start at $45 for a half-hour.
