Students invited to network with potential employers
Students will have the chance to network with potential future employers at a BIBA event next month, writes Jonathan Kent.
Held at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute on July 13, from 5.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., the cocktail reception will feature representatives of many international companies, as well as Finance Minister Paula Cox.
The networking evening is based on the concept of "speed-dating" giving students the opportunity to quickly find out more about different career options available to them. There will be three sessions of "speed interviews" where students will sit with 10 potential employers for three minutes at a time to find out more about the particular company or industry.
This structure gives students the opportunity to ask questions and get an insight into job opportunities that they may not previously have thought about. It also gives potential employers the opportunity to speak with young Bermudians and educate them about career options available to them.
"These are opportunities that you don't often get," BIBA CEO Cheryl Packwood said. "There will be a chance to learn about interviewing techniques and how to network, how to make that initial contact so that when you graduate from school you can call them up."
The event is being well supported by businesses, Ms Packwood said. Accountancy, insurance and law organisations will be represented, as well as human resources staff who can give tips on interviewing and resumé writing.
During the "speed dating" there will also be the opportunity to win a variety of prizes ranging from a laptop, a return flight to the US, to an internship — prizes will be awarded for the most promising student, the best interviewee etc. and will be presented at the end of the evening.
For those waiting to take part in the actual sessions, booths will be set up by the various different industry sectors. Industry professionals will also be available to speak with and to answer any questions the delegates may have.
Visitors need not take part in the "speed dating" if they don't wish to.
