Bank puts premium on training

Business leaders of tomorrow can find a path to the top through Butterfield Bank?s Management Training Programme (MTP).

The MTP is designed to equip Bermudian graduates with the skills required to assume management level positions within the Bank and can facilitate promotion to higher level management posts.

Lori Baker-Lloyd, vice president of organisational development and MTP advisor, said participants emerge from the 18-month programme as well rounded employees able to pursue rewarding careers at the Bank.

?The programme is open to recent college graduates and to internal candidates because we realise not everyone has a four-year degree but may have an Associate?s degree and some solid work experience in the Bank,? Ms Lori Baker-Lloyd said.

Participants work on a rotation basis in different areas of the Bank and mentoring is a key feature of the programme.

?Working in core areas of the Bank and learning the basics of banking has really helped me. I couldn?t imagine working at a bank without this experience because it makes you realise how much it takes to run a bank,? trainee Joel Duffy said.

Monique Lister said: ?It has been a really great experience. By rotating through different departments you learn about procedures. I gained a great understanding of the Bank so in the future when you are in management you understand the decision making process.?

Shahri Scraders said: ?I have a BA (Bachelor of Arts) in General Studies but I wasn?t sure what I wanted to do but when I found about the programme it helped me to find focus in my life regarding my career.?

Kenrick Richardson said: ?I have been in the Bank for eight years and before I came to the programme in June I was a supervisor in operations. I wanted to learn what it takes to be an even better leader and this programme is a great launching pad to strive for better things.?

The Bank?s MTP is in its eighth year in its current form but a version of the programme started in the 1980s. In the last three years the programme has enjoyed a 100 percent placement and a 100 percent retention rate.

There are four mandatory rotations ? retail, operations, audit and ERM (Enterprise Risk Management) and the final two rotations are at the trainee?s choosing.

The final placement is by mutual agreement and the trainees are afforded quarterly luncheon sessions with the chief executive of Butterfield Bank Alan Thompson.

Each trainee is assigned a senior and executive mentor as well as a peer mentor (graduates from the programme who give support and advice based on their experience).

?Successful participants of the MTP are deemed to be on a management track and are put into professional positions,? Ms Lori Baker said.
