Bank's charity reaches far and wide

The Bank of Bermuda Foundation means to get a bang out of its buck - and it wants it to be heard on distant shores.

The Foundation this week announced its second quarter recipients had received grants totalling more than $400,000. Among the chosen to receive money from the charitable arm of the Island's largest bank, was the Bermuda Regiment Charitable Trust. The Foundation said that the money had helped members of the Bermuda Regiment Band and the Bermuda Gombeys to travel to Edinburgh, Scotland to take part in the famed Military Tattoo.

In total, eight other organisations - from a church to a dance company to a youth organisation - also received funding from the Bank of Bermuda Foundation at $25,000 or more a pop.

Bank of Bermuda Foundation spokesperson David Lang said in a press statement issued this week: "We are pleased to support the many charitable initiatives on our Island that care for our community and people, preserve our heritage, culture and environment and help develop our youth.

"We commend the work of these charities whose initiatives will benefit our whole community."

The recipients for the second quarter grants were as follows:

The Bermuda Autism Support and Education Society - The Foundation's donation enabled BASE to host workshops on verbal behaviour techniques to Bermuda parents, teachers, paraprofessionals and therapists that live or work with autism.

Bermuda Dance Company - Through the Foundation's support, Bermudians, both young and old can be exposed to the energy and creativity of our young talented dancers and experience the excitement in the expression of dance.

Bermuda Island Games Association - Representatives from more than 15 of Bermuda's National Sports governing bodies attended the Island Games held in Guernsey earlier this year. Purvis Primary School - The grant given to Purvis will enable it to introduce the internationally recognised MicroSociety programme, which emphasises real life experiences, instruction and community involvement as part of the classroom experience.

The Family Learning Centre - The Foundation's grant will enable an investment in Socialisation services used to teach new skills and practice building healthy relationships. Delivered by a combination of clinical staff, case managers and trained volunteers the services include Therapeutic Milieu, a Boys Group and Family Group.

Wesley Methodist Church - The Foundation's support will help the church maintain the architectural integrity of their building though current renovation projects, including replacement of stain glass windows and repairs of the sanctuary.

Whitney Institute Middle School - Money granted to Whitney Institute will go towards the school's new Online Curriculum which intended to be a comprehensive, skills based curriculum for mathematics, science, social studies and language arts.

YouthNet - The Foundation is pleased to make a three-year commitment to the successful growth of YouthNet, a school based mentoring programme dedicated to enhancing the lives of the public school students though mentoring.
