Belco holds extra info session

The Bermuda Electric Light Company (Belco) is offering an additional Trade Information Session in response the success of the two sessions held at Belco last week.

Approximately 120 people came to the sessions held over two days to learn about Belco?s Apprenticeship Programme, the Industrial Trades Development Programme.

Belco is offering an additional session to accommodate others who may wish to learn about the Apprenticeship Programme.

Troy Thomas, Belco?s Trades and Technical Training Coordinator said: ?We simply could not accommodate all of the people who wanted to attend the first two sessions.?

?So in the interest of fairness and because we want to find the best candidates, we are pleased to offer an additional information session.?

?Trades people are looking to become certified instead of just working in a trade without the opportunity of upward mobility.?

Mr. Thomas said trades people are looking to their employers to help them become certified to meet minimum industry standards.

?I am overwhelmed that 30 percent of the candidates are women and some of them are highly qualified and one of them stands a very good chance of enter the programme.?

?The calibre of candidates has been very high this year and this will better suit our needs. Unfortunately we may have to turn away some people that really are good.

Successful candidates in Belco?s programme spend up to four years becoming certified in a trade, including two months abroad annually for technical training.

Mr. Thomas said a career as a certified tradesperson offers the opportunity for secure employment and high wages.

The session will be held on Friday, December 9 from 3.30-5:30 pm in Belco?s Training Centre.
