BIBA launches education campaign
The Bermuda International Business Association unveiled its new education campaign on Friday.
Chief executive officer Deborah Middleton said BIBA usually aims at informing Bermudians about the career opportunities in the international business industry.
However, current education issues have spurred BIBA to shift this year?s focus and ensure young people finish high school instead of plugging the industry. This year?s ad campaign theme is ?graduate?.
?This year there has been a call for better education. We had hoped that the graduation rates [at the two public high schools] would be higher,? she said.
She stressed that the key to entering into the international business sector is education and that without it many young people are limiting their options.
One of the posters points to education as the key to getting ahead on the Island: ?Get an education and you can get a home.?
Posters will be displayed in bus terminals outside of four middle schools and two high schools in the coming weeks.
Some of the posters are inspirational and urge students to aim for the career of their dreams such as a fashion designer or video game designer.
Others tackle social issues on the Island.
?We wanted to motivate them but we also thought it was important to address social issues such as teen pregnancy and bringing weapons, like knives, into school,? Ms Middleton said.
She is interested to see the communities reaction to the eye-catching posters. BIBA hopes that people won?t be offended by some of the more candid posters.
Local events co-ordinator Jamela Daniels said BIBA wanted students to relate to the posters and actually take the theme ?graduate? to heart.
?I think the best way to get to students is to be blunt,? she said.
The posters were designed by local firm RB&K Advertising and are expected to be in six bus shelters in the coming weeks.
