`Bookstore staff treated with care'
Former Bermuda Bookstore owner Robert Zuill hopes to close the chapter on a misunderstanding with a former employee who was made redundant following the store's recent sale.
Despite not wanting to comment on disgruntled former employee Ruby Caines on Wednesday, Mr Zuill said yesterday he wanted to clarify several facts.
In a statement, Mr. Zuill said: "Further to the article in today's (Thursday's) Gazette concerning severance packages for Bermuda Book Store Ltd. staff, we would like to make the following clear to you and the readership: In early 2001 we paid an advance severance payment of $10,000 to each of the two staff who recently lost their jobs. Added to the $5,000 which was paid to them in July 2002, this makes for $15,000 severance which is in excess of the amount mentioned in your article and indicates the care and respect with which we always try to treat Bermuda Book Store Ltd. staff." Mr. Zuill added: "Despite having to take over the store suddenly after my father's death, I have tried very hard to give the staff a good deal and share the good fortunes of the store with them and allow them whatever breaks and liberties I could. I always found that they gave loyal honest and professional service and I have always tried to respond in kind. I enjoyed working with them and did my best to ensure that the severance they have been given is generous."
Mr. Zuill was not available to answer any further questions about the dispute.
Mrs. Caines also could not be contacted last night.
