Brown:?Quiet progress? at Club Med

There has been ?quiet progress? in the proposed redevelopment of the former Club Med resort at St. George?s with American real estate developer Jack Avedikian on the Island this week to view the site and hold talks with Government.

When asked twice at a media reception in the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel last week how the proposed multi-million dollar venture was progressing, Tourism Minister Dr. Ewart Brown simply repeated: ?We are making quiet progress.?

He admitted he had met with Mr. Avedikian this week, who is a leading figure with Connecticut-based KJA Developments Inc which is the front runner to transform the empty hotel into a five-star facility with a high quality golf course.

Dr. Brown was also asked by the for his reaction to a far-reaching proposal to redevelop the deserted Morgan?s Point peninsula and create a hotel resort, championship golf course, marina, shops and restaurants and 300 affordable housing units.

The proposal was made by a consortium featuring Clark International, a division of one of the biggest construction companies in the US.

The Deputy Premier was overseas when he read the report of the proposal and said he was ?somewhat surprised? as he was only aware that proposals were being sought to redevelop the old Commissioner?s House on the peninsula, not the entire tract of land.

He said: ?But we learn to live with surprises and when I had the first opportunity I met with the Minister responsible for the Bermuda Land Development Company because I knew that a request for proposal had gone out concerning Commissioner?s House.

?The Minister informed me that was the Request for Proposal that went out and it was limited to Commissioner?s House. The responder chose to add Morgan?s Point for a reason that I do not know.?

He added: ?The Government has not yet decided on what we want to see at Morgan?s Point.

?If and when the Government issues a request for proposal for Morgan?s Point and that organisation happens to be one of the organisations that responds we will be in touch with them.?
