Many Internet users were unable to send emails overseas yesterday.

The Logic and North Rock glitch hit several Bermuda businesses - although emails around the Island were unaffected.

Last night, however, full service had reportedly been restored.

TeleBermuda International Ltd. (TBI), which is licensed to provide long-distance voice, data and Internet services, is the agent responsible for transporting Logic and North Rock emails abroad. The service disruption followed a breakdown in an overseas connection.

TBI president James Fitzgerald blamed yesterday's problems on his company's American-based overseas link AT&T - but the circuits in the US were now up and working, he added.

"The error was with AT&T between our cable station in Tuckerton, New Jersey and New York City, but it took AT&T forever to isolate the problem.

"Everything on North Rock Communications Ltd and Logic Communications Ltd are 100 percent operational now."

Mr. Fitzgerald said that TBI had checked its sub-sea cable and it was working fine. This meant the problem lay with a connection out of New York. He said: "The problem did not affect our long distance telephone service, because all the providers are in New Jersey."

A man who runs an Internet company complained yesterday evening of having a slow service. Pink Pages president Robin Blackburne said that he had bought North Rock's wireless connection last weekend and was assured at the time that if something went wrong with TBI, Cable and Wireless could be used instead.

"When I rang North Rock's customer service, I was told that they did not have an agreement with Cable and Wireless.

"I think it is shocking."

A computer specialist at a major law firm said that he knew something was amiss, as there were always at least six emails from the Hong Kong office greeting him on a Monday morning.

The man. who did not wish to be named said: "I noticed that they were not receiving mine either. I knew for sure when I had to speak with someone in the US and they had not received my email and vice versa."

Logic Communications Limited vice president of sales and marketing Bill Dickinson said the problem was with TBI.

"We switched from TBI to Cable & Wireless this afternoon," said Mr. Dickinson. "Unfortunately, TBI has not been able to fix their problem (at that time)."

By mid afternoon 90 percent of Logic's customers were operational, he added.
