Calvin's DVD answer to Island's high humidity
Calvin Simons wants to help you preserve your personal memories.
The proprietor of Professional Video Services on Reid Street - a company set up in 1996 to offer a wide-range of video services including taping, duplication and editing - is now offering a new service, converting 8mm and 16mm movies and video tapes to DVD format.
Mr. Simons said moving your old movies onto DVD makes sense given Bermuda's high humidity: "The main reason (to do this) is the preservation of your valuable video tapes by archiving them onto DVD.
"In Bermuda the combination of high humidity, dampness and mildew reduces the life span of tape to a maximum of about 10 years and sometimes much less with low quality tapes."
Although DVDs won't last forever, Mr. Simons said they will last up to 50 years or more - as long as they are properly cared for.
Mr. Simons recommended transferring movies onto DVD even if you don't currently own a DVD player as your "memories are preserved".
He added that the prices on DVD players were also dropping off significantly.
