Captive Conference to focus on healthcare

The First Annual Bermuda Captive Conference scheduled to take place next month will open with a special track on healthcare led by the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management.

Judy Hart, President Bermuda Society for Healthcare Risk Management (BSHRM) and Pamela Popp, president ASHRM will open the conference.

Bill McDonough, Senior Vice President, Marsh Healthcare National Practice Leader will moderate a Futurecast for Health Care: How to Identify and Get Through Growing Pains with Your Captive.

Ms Hart will later address the underwriter?s perspective on providing excess medical professional liability reinsurance to a captive program versus traditional excess coverage in enterprise risk.

Other speakers will focus on what it takes to create a hybrid self-insured model in the spirit of enterprise risk and offer broker and client perspectives on the journey to post program development; the role of the captive management team in partnership with the broker.

Registration for the conference, which is scheduled to take place September 12 to 14, is ?going very well?, according to conference chair Roger Gillette who is also chairman of the Insurance Development Council which is organising the conference.

?That one day will not be dedicated to captives. It will be broader than captives however it will attract a number of people so we are quite excited about the association with ASHRM in planning our conference.?

The final two days of the conference will feature a Captive 101 session for risk management professionals who are evaluating establishing a captive in Bermuda and for those professionals new to captive insurance companies.

The conference will also include a regulatory update from Government as well as a tax update. Other sessions will address the Challenges of Fronting, Rent-a-Captives, Group/Association Captives and tips and pitfalls once you establish a captive. Rory Gorman, managing director, Marsh Management Services (Bermuda) Ltd will moderate a session on Corporate Governance ? Sarbanes-Oxley issues Lessons to Learn.

Speakers will also share some of their experiences of how they have assisted their clients in developing successful investment programs that not only maximise risk-adjusted returns but also satisfy the collateral requirements of the captive. A panel of Bermuda reinsurers will speak about captive reinsurance while another session on Unusual Captive Uses will explore non-traditional captive solutions as well as look at traditional coverages with a new twist.

Organisers also plan to encourage delegates to create a Bermuda club comprised of captive owners to provide an arena to discuss challenges and opportunities faced by captive and rent-a-captive insurance companies.

?It will really be a networking group to enable Bermuda captive owners to have contact with other Bermuda captive owners,? Mr. Gillett said adding that while his organisation would provide support, the ultimate design of the club would be left up to captive owners. ?We?re just trying to provide something to them that they would see as useful and if it takes off as we feel it will then is just becomes another advantage of working in a domicile like Bermuda with such a diverse group of captives here.?
