CellularOne launches all-in-one package
CellularOne has launched a complete home communications package that includes wireless home phone service and high speed Internet service.
The cellular phone provider began offering Internet service in October 2003, but an upgrade of its mobile network to a third-generation high-speed data network has allowed it to introduce wireless fixed home telephone service as well as a much higher speed of wireless Internet service.
Michael Leverock, the company?s chief operating officer said: ?We saw a problem with some of the ways communications was being presented to customers ? a bill here for Internet, a bill over here for your home phone, and another one for you cellphone. In between all of those were a number of hidden charges, line access fees and so on, which made the offers not as attractive. Bermudians have to deal with a lot of bills, but they were not always getting the best deal.?
The Internet component brings in household data speeds much faster than any available home service in Bermuda, and for less money, said Mr. Leverock who also explained why the company has nicknamed it ?the bull?.
?The unit has two horns which reminds us of a bull and also with a bull being fast, charging it was synonymous with our high speed service. That service can give you speeds in excess of what you can get today with DSL service. We know for a fact that in our testing we get speeds in excess of 500 kilobytes per second. We pretty much guarantee you will have at least 300 kilobytes per second on the service with bursts up to as much as 2.4 megabytes.?
Unlimited Internet access is $89 per month. The wireless home phone service. called ?the yak? is $59 per month and includes unlimited local calls, free voice mail, call forwarding, caller ID and 3-way calling. The company will not bill customers for overcalls.
?This service is being put in place because we saw a need for the public to have an alternative for telephone service. get serve take it home, plug it in and it works.?
Customers who subscribe to both home phone and Internet for $119 per month will also receive ten percent off their monthly cellular package.
CellularOne?s home phone service does not require any special installation by the company so customers can connect as soon as they get home. The service does however require the use a specific wireless home phone which the company sells for $199 or rents at $8 per month. The company?s Internet service requires a modem which sells for $299 or rents at $10 per month. It take about five minutes to set up.
The company also offers a separate portable wireless service for those on the go.
?We do offer high speed wireless Internet for laptops using a card so this high speed service is actually still available for those that want to have mobility using our high speed network,? said Mr. Leverock.
