Companies should be employersof choice
A vision not shared is an hallucination, management guru Bob Moore said at the Bermuda Employers? Council leadership conference at the Hamilton Princess this week.
On Tuesday management leaders attended Key Leadership Strategies For A Winning Company presented by the author of ?Turning Good People Into Top Talent?.
Mr. Moore captivated the audience with his dynamic presentation style as he sought to address how to introduce winning management techniques and ways to maximise the talent of employees.
?Your company can either be an employer of choice or just a place to take a job of last resort. A compelling vision will bring in talent,? Mr. Moore said.
?A vision must be shared, as a vision not shared is an hallucination. There has to be clarity about clarity and agreement on purpose, goals, roles and procedures.?
He said top talent is attracted to a responsibility based culture where employees become engaged and productive and where they can be retained.
?Empowering leaders are coach-based managers who encourage shared acts of leadership, facilitate continuous learning and higher levels of emotional intelligence.
?Leaders must be facilitators and be able to satisfy the needs of employees and customers. They must have social awareness and have empathy for others.?
Mr. Moore said the first responsibility of leaders is to build high levels of trust and to have a realistic assessment of their own strengths and weaknesses.
?Leaders should have the ability to influence and inspire. Behaviour is only the tip of the iceberg, what we are thinking and feeling often determines how we respond.?
He said up to 90 percent of a hiring decision are based on interviews, which are only 14 percent effective as a predicator of future performance.
?Eighty percent of employee turnover can be traced back to mistakes made in hiring. Winning companies have effective screening programmes but you have to know what you are looking for.
?You have to be able to match talent to the job and effective talent management can bring engagement and retention.?
