XL Insurance (Bermuda) Ltd. has announced the appointment of Don Baker as executive vice president at XL Insurance (Bermuda) Ltd. with management responsibility for that company's Bermuda insurance operations.
Mr. Baker has almost 20 years experience in the Bermuda insurance market with broker Marsh and McLennan and more recently as CEO of the Bermuda office of Zurich Insurance Company.
He will report to Clive Tobin, president of XL Insurance (Bermuda) Ltd. and CEO of XL's commercial large account insurance business - known as XL Insurance Global Risk.
Mr. Tobin said: "Don's insurance knowledge and reputation in the Bermuda market, along with his financial expertise, will be an enormous asset to XL. Don will also serve as the Director of Global Programs for XLIGR, where he will be a key driver in administering our global network for multinational clients."
The Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies (BFIS) announced that Bermuda-based insurance and reinsurance company XL Capital is sponsoring a new scholarship to be named the BFIS XL Award.
LaVonne Lee has been named as this year's recipient of the $11,000 award. Ms Lee completed her high school education at Teen Services before attending Bermuda College and The School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science of St. John's University (formerly The College of Insurance) in New York. She was originally awarded a scholarship from BFIS in 2002 and will complete her insurance degree in December.
Paul Simons, BFIS trustee and vice president at XL Re Ltd., said: "We have come to know LaVonne since she has been working for XL Re in the underwriting department this summer and are delighted that she has been chosen for this award. She is an exceptional and hard-working individual who is clearly focused on her career goals while also raising a young family."
Sonia Whayman, manager of the XL Foundation, XL's philanthropic arm, said that in choosing a recipient for the award the organisation had looked for someone with high academic achievement who required financial support. She added: "When LaVonne's name was put forward by BFIS for consideration for this award, we were very pleased, as we already knew her. This is definitely a win-win situation and we wish her all the best in her final semester."
Established in 1996, The Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies' purpose is to ensure that over time Bermuda's insurance companies have a pool of well-educated and prepared Bermudian staff to draw from. This is being achieved through a programme of scholarships, mentoring and internships.
Twenty- five BFIS scholarship recipients are now working in the insurance sector and a further fifteen BFIS scholarship students are currently in college.
Bermuda-based insurance giant ACE Limited this week announced the appointment of Frank Lattal to the position of Chief Claims Officer.
In a Press statement, ACE said Mr. Lattal's new role would give him responsibility for overseeing all aspects of claims management and administration for the ACE Group of Companies. Mr. Lattal, formerly General Counsel for ACE Bermuda, will report directly to president and chief operating officer of ACE Limited Evan Greenberg.
Mr. Lattal, who joined ACE in 1998, has more than 20 years of legal and claims experience. In 2000, he was named senior vice-president, claims, and in 2002, was appointed to the post of general counsel for ACE Bermuda.
Mr. Lattal is admitted to practice law in both New York and New Jersey and holds a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Bucknell University in Pennsylvania. He received his law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law in Indiana and also holds a master's degree in environmental studies from Montclair State University in New Jersey.
Endurance Specialty Holdings Ltd. this week announced the appointment of John T. Baily as a director on its board.
Mr. Baily was formerly president of Swiss Re Capital Partners, where he worked from 1999 to 2002. Prior to joining Swiss Re, Mr. Baily was a partner at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (and its predecessor, Coopers & Lybrand) for 23 years, serving as the head of the Coopers & Lybrand Insurance Practice Group.
Endurance CEO Kenneth LeStrange said: "We are pleased to welcome John to the Board of Directors. John's accounting expertise and depth of insurance industry knowledge will certainly be an asset to our company, and we look forward to his contributions to Endurance."
Local information technology and communications company CCS Group Ltd. has announced the appointment of Bermudian Michael Davis to the company's networking and professional services team.
CCS Chief Executive Officer Rob Loxton said in a Press statement: "Mike joins the CCS team from high-end e-commerce and network development company, PointMedia LLC in New Jersey.
"Mike's experience is wide ranging with more than 13 years in the telecommunications and Internet industry. Specific areas of expertise include wireless area networks (WAN), emerging wireless technologies, private lease line, DSL, Microsoft IIS, Exchange, SQL Server and the integration of database solutions to front-end web development for e-commerce."
