Cup Match money in circulation jumps

The Bermuda Monetary Authority said yesterday that $88.7 million of Bermuda currency in notes and coins will be circulating over the Cup Match weekend.

That is the equivalent of about $1.4 million for every man, woman and child on the Island.

This is an increase of 8.4 percent on last year, when there was $81.8 million around at the same point last year.

The total amount of notes and coins issued to the banks by the Bermuda Monetary Authority between July 1 and July 30 - the traditional pre-Cup Match period - is $12.4 million - about $194 extra per resident for the period.

In 1999 this figure was $7.5 million , and in 1998 it was just $5.6 million.

Cup Match is traditionally one of the periods when the figure for notes in circulation rises sharply. This seasonal peak is normally reversed very quickly after the holiday, according to the BMA.
